CA: First appointment made to California stem cell board (Birthing of a new bureaucracy?)
Bakersfield Californian ^ | 11/5/04 | AP - Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Dr. Philip Pizzo, dean of Stanford University's medical school, on Friday became the first appointee to a board that will oversee a new stem cell research agency approved by California voters.

Proposition 71, which passed 59 percent to 41 percent Tuesday, will have the state borrow $3 billion to fund stem cell research. It establishes the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, which will be managed by a 29-member board to be appointed over the next month.

The board, in turn, will appoint two committee to approve grants. One committee will approve money for research, while the other will be in charge of doling out funds to build new labs and other facilities.

Pizzo was appointed by state Controller Steve Westly, who gets to make five appointments to the 29-member board. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and Treasurer Phil Angelides each get to appoint five members as well.

In addition, the five University of California medical schools in San Diego, Irvine, Los Angles, San Francisco and Davis each get one appointment.

"The Institute for Regenerative Medicine will bring new funds to a field of research that has shown the potential to change the way we understand and treat disease," Pizzo said. "Passage of the proposition is a clear affirmation that the citizens of California value this area of scientific investigation."

How many people will be on each commitee? sounds like this will be admin heavy... most government jobs are. and very little of this debt passed onto Californians will go to stem cell research

LOL

Can you say "boondoggle"?

The amazing thing is that 99% of the morons who voted for this don't know jack squat about what "stem-cell research" is. They have no good reason to believe that it is useful, or has potential, or anything. They have vague foggy idiotic notions that it would have saved Christopher Reeve's life or something. ALL they REALLY know about it is that Bush doesn't want it.

And that's all they needed to know! "If Bush doesn't want it, let's fund it with 6 billion dollars we can't afford!" It's amazing.

Just think of the reverse-psychology opportunities here... ;-)

The majority of voters pissed away 6 Billion dollars (30 year payback) on these bonds to fund bureaucratic bank accounts....nothing else.

Dr. Josef Mengele would be proud. He could only wish he had a $3 billion ($6 billion w/interest) budget to experiment on cloned human embryos.

The Institute for Regenerative Medicine

I am having waking nightmares - this is reminding me of Charles Colson's book... Gideon's Torch., written in 1995.

In his FICTIONAL book - he called them "Regeneration Centers", funded by the government and Hollywood. In many book reviews - it was called "COLSON'S FANTASY...an ANTI-WOMAN TURNER DIARY FOR THE 90'S."...

It may have been sold as fiction, it may have been called fantasy... but it has all come to pass.

I'm going to get it out and read it again.

'Soylent GReen' comes to mind as well.

Out of death at an early age, new life is sprung.

Some folks will chase pipe dreams all day long if ya blow enough smoke in their eyes.. or stuff enough crack in their pipes.

At the end of 5 years and no significant results are yielded, will this research be stopped on the taxpayer's dime?

The Nazis only made lampshades with human body parts (skin). Now, enlightened Californians have approved cannibalism of youngest humans to treat older humans.

Blaming this solely on Arnold is kindof a tough sell when the voters just approved of this. I think he's wrong as can be on the subject, and don't like it one bit, but reality is reality.
