RALEIGH, N.C. - Vandals spray painted vulgar messages on the walls of the North Carolina Republican Party headquarters and left a burned effigy depicting President Bush (news - web sites) and Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), police said.
Authorities detained several suspects early Saturday, hours after the attacks took place Friday night, but had not filed any charges, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.
A police officer reported Friday that about 100 people wearing masks and gloves were walking down a street near the headquarters, authorities said.
The Republican president won re-election Tuesday after a challenge by Kerry, a Democrat. John Edwards (news - web sites), who was Kerry's running mate, is a senator from North Carolina.
"This is not a political statement," Sughrue said. "A political statement is what we made Tuesday. This is a crime."
Police said at least two windows were broken and it appeared that the vandals tried to put incendiary devices inside of the building.
Investigators also found a partially burned, two-headed effigy in military fatigues. One head had the face of Bush and the other the face of Kerry.
"The people who did this are sick," said Kevin Howell, communications director for the state Republican Party. "People don't understand that debate and elections are part of the process. This isn't how you act."
Where are Kerry, Edwards, the DNC, and its minions (Pelosi?) to denounce this. POP, "Party of Peace" alert.
Goodwill, tolerance and love from the Party Of Diversity.
Somebody ought to alert these geniuses that the election is over and, as must be a familiar experience in their little, pointless lives, they lost.
Heard about this moments ago on the late night news. It was reported that the police investigated then deployed to protect Democrat campaign offices. Go figure.
Pinging you. Are you still compiling?
Barney Fife: Why are you folks wearing those masks and gloves?
Masked Figure: Oh, just out for a late night stroll Officer.
Barney: Oh. OK, well, have a nice night then.
Masked Figure: OK, we will.
The NC GOP headquarters are in a highly democrat populated area, just a couple blocks from NC State University. Late Friday night all that's out there are college students, probably drinking,, so it's an easy guess who did this. Earlier yesterday there was something on a local talkshow about an NC State professor decrying the stupidity of the red state voters. I'd say the people who did this were students incited by the prof.
My car was attacked in the same general area because of my pro- Bush bumper sticker. How do I know it was because of my sticker? I was IN the car!!! A man came up to my car, started pounding on it and screaming obscenities at President Bush and me for supporting him.
Too bad my teenage son wasn't there....he'd have flattened him for talking that way to his Mama.
Why couldn't these morons done this before the election, so GWB could've trounced F'n and the Breck Girl by an even bigger margin in NC?
We need to get pictures of the damage and spread them far and wide.
The NC GOP did have some minor vandalism before the election.
I stopped there the day my car was attacked and they said they had had flags and posters stolen. Also that they were getting reports of the same from other people.
I hope the radical left keeps up with this type behavior. It only reinforces the conservative democrat's decision as why they voted for a republican President and may drive some of them into our party.
Sign stealing, etc., has occured in politics since the beginning of time, but this year it's been so violent. Once the left climbs out of its state of collective shock, I fear protests in the street every time GWB so much as yawns.
A friend of mine is a grad student at Duke. Prior to the election, she'd wear her Bush-43 shirt to class on occasion and would constantly tell me how much BS and ridicule she would take. She loves this stuff, though, so - of course - she wore the shirt the day after the election and no one said a word to her.
Hold on...You're giving these retards way too much credit. Remember, these are some of the same type of idiots that, you know, think the earth is flat....we didn't go to the moon....there are aliens among us......
PING
This will continue and get worse as we progress with our agenda, Socialists do not take over with VOTES, they do it with violence.
That's kind of creepy! I would have been on the cell calling the police! I'm kind of whimpy though!! I'm glad you're okay and that they didn't try to physically harm you!
See the NM strategy is perfect. By the time we get the votes counted in January, all the lefties will have forgotten why they're angry.
Actually, that's enough to get me to draw, and perhaps even to point. In fact, thinking on it, if I couldn't drive away (1st choice), I would have drawn, told the guy to get away, and then assuming he didn't back off, pointed.
LOL! I have a NRA decal right among my Bush stickers on the tailgate of my truck. The 500 is a big big for the glove compartment, but my 4" Model 25 fits nicely.
Ping!
"this isn't how you act"
Of course it is--if you are a democrat and don't get your way.
It is against the law in NC to walk in public with masks or hoods.
I was going to remove the "W-04" sticker from my rear window, but I think I'll keep it instead. Its fun to antagonize the unhinged masses. Plus, I have my own aftermarket security system:
This sounds like the perfect answer to the question "Why do you need a semi-automatic rifle with large capacity magazines?" Sometimes a six gun just won't do.
I don't think the libs mind these kind of tactics. They certainly don't disapprove of palestinian suicide bombings.
Keep your powder dry...
Short answer - yes.
I'm familiar with the area and visited HQ several times during the race. Most of the residential homes on Hillsborough street are long gone. Now offices for lawyers, accountants, lobbyists, architects, etc line the block.
Go a few blocks west and Hillsborough runs next to the campus of North Carolina State University. NCSU is more conservative than nearby UNC but probably not by much. No doubt they could raise 100 anarchists, etc, especially with reinforcements from UNC and Duke.
Hillsborough is party central on Friday night, I'm sure many people noticed the 100 marchers and then summarily ignored them. The block the GOP is on is much quieter, drivers may have noticed the mob but missed the arson.
Mmmmmm, Model 25!
Long live moonclippys!
My Model 625

Otherwise known as the 'truck gun'. (image is close to life size, heh heh)
I blame the incitement of the media. There are many who believe every exaggeration, every snide remark, every expression of "hopeless resignation" in the press.
Dan Rather still has a job, so this will continue.
Sweet!
Mine's a blued 4 screw 1959 vintage with an action job and coke bottle grips. I am a big Smith fan, especially ones in the 1940-1975 age range.
MMMMM!
Mine is a 'Model or 1989' with 5" barrel and a great shooter. I had the fiber sight added, the cylinder chamfered and the action smoothed. I picked it up the gun show last year for $350!
I'm looking for one with a 4" barrel to shoot IDPA.
Sniper rifle would be more effective against a mob, would it not?
Never let too many get too close...
Yep. More morons to memorialize in memory.
