I knew she was in "L'il Abner", but could not remember what part she played.

TRIVIA NOTE: Born November 10, 1924, in Ashley, Pennsylvania Russell David "Russ" Johnson joined the Army Air Corps in World War II, and earned the Purple Heart when his B-25 Mitchell twin-engine medium bomber was shot down in the Philippines during a bombing run in March, 1945. He returned stateside and pursued a career in acting where he appeared in a number of westerns and such classic science fiction films as It Came From Other Space (1953) and This Island Earth (1955). The 5' 10'' actor also reprised his role as the Professor on the TV movies Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978); The Castaways on Gilligan's Island (1979); The Harlem Globetrotter's on Gilligan's Island (1981) and provided the Professor's voice on the spin-off Saturday cartoon series THE NEW ADVENTURES OF GILLIGAN'S ISLAND (1974-77) and GILLIGAN'S PLANET (1982) where the Professor and friends were stranded on a distant planet. In a 1992 comic strip "The New Breed" by Chris Ramras, the Professor is seen writing in his secret diary. "This place is an island paradise! TWO gorgeous women...and I'm the local stud!...The others actually believe I can build a radio, generator, housing but not a boat! LOSERS!" Currently, Russell Johnson lives on Bainbridge Island in Washington State. He maintains his own internet website at http://www.russell-johnson.com/

Side Note: TV Acres initially reported the wrong type of WWII plane in the above summary, but The Professor himself emailed our site on Friday, 20 Jun 2003 09:58:38 and kindly said "Jerome, many thanks for your TV Acres.....very nice....one correction.....my airplane in WW2 was a B25 Mitchell twin engine medium bomber.....NOT a B24 liberator....great job, Jerome......Russell Johnson" TV Fans, I want you to know that as of this moment, I can now die and go to heaven for the Professor has spoken to me...and it was good.

Why is she wearing panty hose on her arms?

'James', is given work out of respect to his dead brother.

My sister and I were big Second City fans. She bought the Lemmings album--the one with the Humpback Whales, The Immigrants, The Gymnast, Mister Rogers, etc.. And of course, we read National Lampoon (1971-1982), watched SNL (from Day One to Ebersole), and SCTV religiously. And IMO John Belushi was NOT the talented one in the ensembles. John Belushi was the most notorious character not the most talented. IMO, Jim Belushi had/has greater range in acting and comedy but is hamstrung by a notorious sibling's reputation.

"Why is she wearing panty hose on her arms?"

Some ego's never die. I noticed that too, probably to make her appear firm, toned and hide any aging spots, etc. Vanity is the bane of media personalities. (sarcasm) Po whidda babies....sigh

I can't even blame it on the old recording technology,
that old movie was made the same year as the Wizard of Oz.
Judy Garland could SING, Marlene Dietrich could NOT.

Here's a discussion and pictures of Newmar's "bad plastic surgery":

I was watching an old movie last night with Marlene Dietrich. And I still can't figure out why she was such a box office star.

My understanding of this has always been that she must somehow appeal to men who like their women to seem like men in drag. There must be a lot of these guys around and a lot of them are (or were) German.

".....Newmar, now 65, ......"

Must have been written quite awhile ago. She was born in 1933 according to her bio.

Julie Newmar has been a leftie in the past. Also a bit of a kook.

I remember her first from the TV show, "My Living Doll" starring Bob Cummings. Oh yeah.

She had a mole on her back that cut her off. Oh yeah.

they don't make women like that anymore!

That's the first thing that came to mind for me too. I really liked that show.

It's good to see Hollywood back to normal.

Yeah, back to the days when the only time you heard Julie Newmar's name was in something like this:

Anyone who would campaign for John Kerry as per post # 42 isn't a Republican. I always assume entertainers are dims until proven otherwise. The Second City/SNL axis is almost always left leaning.

Perhaps.
Considering the vast changes in fashion and style, I can still understand why men thought she was a very attractive woman. And even with the accent, her voice isn't that bad in regular dialog. And the acting wasn't bad for that era either. But they should NEVER have EVER let that woman even TRY to sing.

That was unnecessarily mean. Jim Belushi is a pretty fair actor, his TV show not withstanding. He's made a few very entertaining movies.

Wow! She a CatWoman! What a figure! The current so called CatWoman (Hally Berry) can hold nothing next to the Original CatWoman. The current one is Halley Berry is rather ugly in my opinion, she is fading fast.
