Bork backs Specter's rival in Senate race (He says the judiciary leadership is a concern.)

When former President Ronald Reagan nominated conservative jurist Robert H. Bork for the U.S. Supreme Court in 1987, Sen. Arlen Specter doomed Bork's bid with sharp questioning and a party-line-crossing "no" vote.

More than 16 years later, Bork has struck back.

Saying he was alarmed by the likelihood that Specter would become chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee if reelected, Bork yesterday endorsed U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey, a conservative who is challenging Specter in the April primary.

"He'll have a strong influence on the kind of judges we get. I think that's reason enough to hope he won't win," Bork said of Specter, speaking to reporters shortly before a fund-raiser for Toomey in Pittsburgh.

I do hope that conservatives stay after this issue. Weasels need to know there are ramifications to their actions, that they will have to answer for their deeds. Otherwise, they are simply emboldened to continue their weaselly ways.

I don't know if you saw the date of the original article "1-8-2004".

So how does Bork backing him over 11 months ago matter now. Toomey did not get elected, might not have even if he ran. We need to face realities and work from where we are.

Preventing Specter from being chairman is now critical, not who might have could have been elected 5 days ago.

THAT'S exactly why we have to stop Specter. I don't trust him! Especially now since he would be in a position to sabotage President Bush's appointments! He's NOT a man of honor! He's a RINO. His word means nothing, and I don't buy his attempt to gain our trust.

Robert Bork just appeared on Fox News expressing his strong opinion that Senator Specter NOT serve as Chair on the Senate Judicial Committee.

Robert Bork is a fine and honorable man. The fact that Sen. Specter single-handedly destroyed his chance for appointment is national tragedy.

Senator Specter MUST be held accountable.

If Sen. Specter is alienated by conservatives, the rest of the moderate Republicans may also be effected. Loss of the moderate Republicans puts the Senate back at about 50-50 and nothing gets done.

"Was that on the Fox News Sunday show?"

It was this afternoon on Fox News Live, I believe.
It was definitely not the Sunday show with Chris Wallace.
I wish it had been, since that show replays later.

"We New Yorkers did not go the way of Bush-Cheney - they lost here by more than 1 million votes. New Jersey and Connecticut also said no to them. And the West Coast turned against the incumbents. (As did much of Europe, where, typical of the reaction, The Daily Mirror in London asked in a front page headline, "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?")

"So what do those of us who opposed the President do now?

... Arlen Specter makes me optimistic. A Republican who is set to take over the chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he's telling the Bushies that he does not want to see judicial nominees who are extremists from the right."

Anything that makes E.R. Shipp happy should be avoided at all costs.
