the line has no apparent freeway and seems to be between montgomery and birmingham. your hypothesis makes sense to me.

All of the rural counties in the south that are blue are small agrarian counties with majority black populations.Look at the Miss.River. The flood plain on both sides is blue.

Right. it can't be population because Houston doesn't show as very high. It must be winning margin. I think :)

I agree. Alaska makes no sense, unless the height is indeed some multiplier of percentage victory margin and population.

Actual it shows the positive aspect of a war with China, remember the threat to nuke Los Angeles back in 1996? I can picture daring them to do it, like the movie where Danny DeVito's wife was kidnapped, and kept daring them to kill her.

I see it as people who like to be interdependent, and not independent, prefer cities, which further makes them more dependent (and I'm not just talking about welfare folks.)

Such people much more highly value the benefits of big government, and thus vote Democrat

I think it also has to do with the fact that Government is pretty much the only industry most urban areas have. Therefore most of the people who live in urban areas have some connection with the Govt either via employment or the employment of friends and relatives.

If it were height=population, Bernalillo would be the tallest in NM -- because it's not only the most populous, it's also the smallest and most densely-populated. I'm pretty sure it's the margin of winning votes (i.e.- the "density" of the winning vote margin), which is what I was attempting to say, albeit not as clearly as I could have. I don't think it has anything to do with population, in and of itself -- other than in how that population contributes to winning vote margins. It's almost easier to draw it:

EX (line represents height on graph):

2 million votes, 1 million vote margin for K/E: ==============================

2 million votes, 34,000 vote margin for K/E: =

I don't think height=population. Look at the Houston area (4th largest city in the country)-- it should be very tall. Conservatives live on the outskirts and Shelia Jackson Lee's constitutents live in the city. I think there was a good sized vote for Kerry in her district.

If they had forseen the County voting structure they would have based Electoral College Votes by County.

This is something that I have been pondering lately. Why couldn't we have a "STATE" electoral college?

Meaning, a candidate would have to win a majority of counties in order for the state to go for one candidate or another.

This way the ENTIRE STATE POPULATION is represented rather than the BIG urban centers.

How hard would it be to do this?

Perhaps it is simple absolute vote margin by county. Reno (Washoe, with over 150,000 votes) appears invisible, and it was 51% Bush - 47% Kerry in that county (7000 vote margin). This supports the total vote margin hypothesis.

The exact same thing is true of Albuquerque (Bernalillo County) which was 51-47, less than 10,000 vote difference, out of ~250,000 voters.

I think we have figured it out.

Maybe its highest percentages for a particular candidate: if Kerry got 90% of the vote in that county then it would be very high.

After looking at the ESRI website, I don't think it's the margin, just the total votes per county, and then whoever won (by whatever margin) determines the color of the county. But this is a guess.

Has anyone seen the purple map? NPR said someone blended the reds and blues together, making shades of purple and lavender. That might be interesting to look at.

Here it is. It seems designed to blur the differences, and to minimize the impact of the widespread Bush victory (he got at least 40% support in 47 states, while Kerry failed to get 40% in 13 states.

A better way to illustrate vote strength (2000 election) keeps the Red and blue, with lighter shades for lower margins (white for even), instead of muddying up the picture with purples.

That San Fransico margin seems really interesting compared to NY and LA.

Chicago definately needs an investigation with nearly 1 million in the margin.

i agree. dems should be red, we should be blue. even peter jennings made a comment that the colors were controversial. i suspect they didn't give dems red because they were afraid it would be associated with communism and socialism. we should start a movement to switch the colors.

I thought the same thing in 2000.

In 1988, the GOP was blue.

I never noticed the colors in 1992 and 1996. But when I noticed the colors in 2000, I thought maybe they switched the colors back and forth. So I was curious what color they'd use in 2004. Then I saw...red again?

I'd like to see some definite numbers on number of votes versus number of registered voters and the number of registered voters versus the voting age population, region by region. Another thing to find out are your chances of getting a provisional (or normal?) ballot if it's not established at the precinct that you are eligible.
