As you learned in grade school, Washington and Lincoln are the greatest Presidents. Washingtonm is the indespensible American. Without him, there would have been no others.
But Lincoln is close, and even among those who recognize his greatness, there is a lack of appreciation. Lincoln's ability to capture the essentials of the American idea is unmatched by anyone--even Jefferson. And above all, Lincoln was a consummate politician at exactly the time when the country needed a savvy politician more than any other. To keep Kentucky and Maryland in the Union while waging a war against their interests was masterful. And his ability to keep France and Britain, our two greatest enemies at bay despite their territorial claims in North America was sheer genius. The latter is often mistakenly attributed to Seward. No such thing. Lincoln is the man of his time.
Do these guys really have no clue? They're asking God for President Cheney?
I'd adjust to that with a minimum of effort, but they would HATE it. LOL
The NYT article relates the following bit of history:
"A LITTLE more than a month before he was assassinated, Abraham Lincoln stood at the east portico of the Capitol and delivered his second inaugural address. It was a brief speech with a distinctly religious message: he twice cited biblical verses, and made a dozen references to God, most strikingly in assessing the opposing sides in the Civil War. ..."
It then asserts:
"The address was roundly criticized in some newspapers for overstepping the bounds separating church and state."
But it provides no references.
Personally, I doubt that a fair reading of Lincoln's critics would lead a rational person to conclude that their point was to criticize Lincoln over "church and state" issues.
Does anybody know whether NYT can provide a reference, or did the writer just make that up?
There's a long list of made-up facts in recent MSM history.
bump
The liberal democrats are wondering how they lost the election???... then an american paper publishes this disgusting tripe of an article advocating the assaination of our country's elected leader. Have the left totally lost it?
The response to Lincoln's speech, both here and oversees, was universally and overwhelmingly positive, except (as one would expect), South of the Mason-Dixon.
oversees = overseas. Damn spellchecker checks what I spell, not what I mean...
"...Democrats, especially, are left to wonder: What will it take to break the pattern - an act of God? "
The rapture would just about qualify, and fine by me too.
Oh ... I guess I forgot to consider the opinions expressed in Southern newspapers. But, even in the South, I doubt that "church-state" issues were on the front burner in 1865.
BTTT
I don't think it can be too far away.
I occasionally wished Clinton would ride one of those mechanical bulls and "hurt himself" but I never, ever wished that he be assassinated.
Asolutely not.
Vile crap.
I fear this too. I didn't allow myself to really entertain this fear, until I read this trash. But with a small "army" of propagandized, hateful radicals who seem to blame ALL of the world's ills on Bush, and who are more and more frustrated, I do hope the government is taking this kind of threat seriously. They see BUSH as the threat, the Nazi, the fascist, not the Islamist radicals. Good God, flame me for being a nervous nelly, but I hope that somehow the Dems hang on to whatever modicum of sanity they have left. The Times is a piece of *%#@. No two ways about it.
That's right... I'd forgetten. And he was a lot like Harry Thruman. A nearly dead breed in the Dem Party of today.
I'm shocked there hasn't been an attempt already. Hats off to the Secret Service I suppose.
All these people have is hate. How did we (America) let this happen? Oh, I could write a book about that - and people have already.
Do they think everything in their lives will suddenly be better without Bush? Have our schools, etc. created an "intafada" (sp?) in the US?
Chilling.
I would seriously send some agents to interview this author and start a file on him if they have not already done so. For the most circulated newspaper in the US to call for the death of a US president is an act of treason.
