School Backs Away from Food Confiscation Policy (Food Nazis!)
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 11/9/04 | Anon

Steven Walley is seething over the "food police" at his son's school.

A letter from the Freedom Elementary School said the county's Health Services Agency plans to educate students and families about healthy eating habits and there was a list of acceptable foods.

It also warned: "We will take away from students any non-nutritious foods such as hot Cheetos or chips, sugary snacks, soda, etc."

Walley couldn't believe it. "The food police," he said, had gone too far.

"There's no law on the books that would allow this," Walley said. "They're saying if I send my kid to school with chips or a Hostess pie for lunch, they're gonna take it away from him. What gives them the right?"

>>For the record, when I was in grade school, they banned soda and candy. And there was quite a black market, lemme tellya.<<

When I was a kid I went with my parents to the farmers market every weekend and stopped in the candy dealers there. I made a killing buying wholesale candy and selling it out of my backpack when they banned it at our school. Parents thought it was funny until I was caught, then the school came down hard on them. I still remember my dad getting in the principles face when he started blaming him for lack of discipline in our home. (Dad was a firm believer in spare the rod spoil the child but couldn't find fault in me making money selling chocolate to fat kids at a premium)

OK, let's do a quick re-cap...In CA, it is perfectly acceptable to put a scalpel in the back of his skull and suck out it's brains, to prevent him from being born alive..but once he is born, it is not OK to put junk food in him...just want to make sure I have all my facts straight before I call these people absolute a'holes.

Probably. If the schools had one scintilla of intelligence though, they'd know that many of those 'juice' box drinks have a bit too much sugar as well.

"School Backs Away from Food Confiscation Policy"

This is NOT a victory.

Firing the school officials involved and prohibiting them from ever holding any position within any school system again, now that would be a victory. Any thing less and they will have only learned to be more covert in promoting their fascism.

I bet these hypocrites also have the usual candy drives for extra money too. Send little Johnny out and if he sells $100 worth of the stuff he gets a prize, just don't eat the stuff here.

Why do I get this vision of teachers chowing down on Cheetos and Snickers bars in the teacher's lounge?

Yeah, they'll confiscate all the yummy snacks, and the teachers will divvy them up in the teacher's lounge after school.

LOL! I still can't understand how a teacher can keep a straight face while lecturing a kid about what to eat when shes standing there with a soda in her hand!

I see it all the time.

The Elian Gonzales photo is a hilarious send-up (if the entire Elian assault weren't so horrible). I don't seem to recall the Fritos bag in the original photo, though.

I guess I'm dating myself, but in my era schools didn't have vending machines of any kind and the school cafeteria sold tax-payer subsidized cartons of milk for 2 cents. The cafeteria sold such delicacies as Spanish Rice and "dessert" was, more often than not, a glob of green jello with whipped cream. When Mom packed my lunch, it was usually PB&J with a few chips. Things were sure simple then!

I wonder if they would allow a child to eat Mexican food. These Kalifornia leftists probably support the whack-o Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is trying to get Mexican food banned.

Hot Cheetos?

There's a variety of Cheetos labeled "Flamin' Hot" that has a red pepper layer on the outside.

Quite tasty.
