This is really a funny idea, Uncledave has expertise, he can get info on prices, etc.

First, it has to be a full page ad, and Uncledave can inquire as to best day of the week to run it, etc. I'm sure that's all well known and important.

Second, we can't use "freerepublic" or any of it's insignia, etc. without permission. So if we do it on our own "Vast Right Wing Conspriracy" might be fine, and most amusing, and a big ole poke in the eye to you know who, as a signature.

Third, I think aiming it at Michael Moore is the way to go. He's been out front, he'll probably even get the joke. And as it's just a "Thank you" I doubt it's actionable in any way.

These are my thoughts. Maybe we need to do a serious pledge thread or something. I am good for no less then $25.00 no more than $100.00. If we get 100 people who could give $100.00 each, that's 10 Grand.

So we need a little more info re: prices and pledges.

I'm not sure how effective these things are, but it's probably true that Variety is one of the remaining pubs with any credibility anymore so it is probably a boon to support them. I'd be curious to see if they'd take it. If they wouldn't, well, then what can I say, things are worse than I thought.

Well, I'm not sure why you would want to give Variety any money, plus, I'd rather see an ad thanking the Swift Vets.

Enjoy the idea, but it won't happen.

The biggest obstacle would be for Variety to accept the ad. Nevermind the Freep insignia's etc.

A magazine can decline any ad for any reason, and will do so especially if it's counter to the editorial mission.

You can easily buy a political ad in the the NY Times because it's mission (supposedly!) is a news organization.

Variety's mission is a trade magazine to the entertainment industry and they would be VERY loath to piss off their readers. They would be too scared of cancellations.

Yep, someone needs to talk to JimRob to see if the Free Republic name can be used.

The Variety is tabloid format, I believe, so the graphic will need to be the appropriate dimensions.

Variety has run controversial ads before. They ran an ad from the Hollywood unions who didn't want the Kyoto treaty because of the job implications. That doesn't mean they'd run one against Moore.

And by all means, if there's an ad, post it before hand so that people can check it for errors. The last thing we need is an error.

Again, I'd be happy to manage the buy but I doubt Variety would approve it.

First thing we'd need is an ad created. Then I can approach Variety for approval. If they say "yes" we can put out the tin cup.

Anyone want to take the lead on making the ad?

Sizes: (We'd be tabloid full page non-bleed)

I never entertained 4/color. The National edition was more money. But I think we agree the Hollywood Edition would be fine.

If we can put this together, I would be happy to do THIS again to raise a few bucks.

This should be interesting.

Bob, sometimes it's about the message, not the messenger.

By the way, I have somebody to make the ad. Somebody very good, but she wants to remain anonymous. And I've assured her she would.

Whoa, an ad in Variety would cost much more than $1000 - $2000. More like $10,000. The professional Journal I worked for charged around $11,000 for a full-page 4-color ad.

Ok, we can't use FR credit card system. So I'm willing to put up money, but I will establish a PAYPAL account unless anyone has any better ideas.
