I thought it was 'tradition' for each cabinet member to resign, and then the president gets to decide whether or not to accept the resignation?

I suspect Don Evans moves back to the private sector where he can more effectively rest and then raise money for 2008.

Wot, no conservatives in the Bush Cabinet?
Wonder what this imports for RKBA.
To: RWR8189
Don Evans had planned to leave. His wife had already moved back to Texas.
He is one of the President's best friends.
To: RWR8189
Me too. Wish we could get Evans at Treasury.

Why is he leaving?
To: Bella_Bru
I think that is for an "outgoing" administration, BB. Like the Toons' cabinet members in late 2000.

(Its time to spend some political capital... Ouch that has to hurt liberals.)
My money is on M. Racicot for AG.
Ashcroft would never get through the Senate for a judge..the media would make the C.Thomas hearings look like Sponge Bob reruns.
To: USNA74
Glad to see Ashcroft go. He was a good senator but a bad AG who was the leader in pushing for statist measures he actually fought as senator.
I want to see a nice pro-2a AG.

I'd love to John Ashcroft on the Supreme Court. He is a very good legal mind.
He was my governor for 8 years.

I think it is, but I'll bet Ashcroft means it. The left has made him such a villian.
I don't see how he needs the pressure anymore.

Ashcroft was certainly a lightning rod of controversy for the Bush Administration- mostly because he's tough and it goes with the territory of bein AG. Many are talking about Rudy Giuliani replacing him. That's about as big a contrast as one gets in the GOP.

They said Ashcrofts's resignation letter was dated Nov. 2nd. There had been reports that the strain of the job had affected his health.
Personally I was kinda surprised about Evans though. Guess he wanted to get back to Midland and the sanity of that town.
