The New York Times broke the media silence on the cause of Arafat's death Friday by suggesting the terrorist leader may have died from AIDS.
In an article entitled "Secrecy by Aides and Silence by Doctors Persists, and What Killed Arafat Is Still a Mystery" the paper chronicled Arafat's rapid health decline and the mystery shrouding his illness.
Two days before his death, aides revealed that Arafat was in a coma after having a brain hemorrhage.
But the Times doubts this stroke was likely not the cause of Arafat's death.
Another clue: "At the time of his medical evacuation to Paris two weeks ago, aides disclosed that he was suffering from a low platelet count and had undergone a platelet transfussion. Since platelets are involved in blood clotting, patients with low counts are predisposed to brain hemorrhages, so Arafat's platelet count may have contributed to his death."
Then the Times noted the AIDS connection: "But low platelet counts in the blood are a common finding in a wide range of afflictions, including severe infections, liver disease, end stage cancer and even AIDS."
Frnech officials have put to rest rumors that Arafat had been poisoned, a story that was widely circulated in the Arab world.

Heh NewsMax, learn English!
"Then the Times noted the AIDS connection: "But low platelet counts in the blood are a common finding in a wide range of afflictions, including severe infections, liver disease, end stage cancer and even AIDS."
That is really stretching it to use the above quote to say that the NYT is suggesting that he died of aids.
And the horrifying part is that he gave blood after 9-11.
I heard some where, France does not require a "cause of death" which is why he went there to possibly cover up this speculation.....Just wish he could have suffered more.....
Well, not really. Now it's too late.
I honestly fear for Islamic terrorist reprisals on NYT....
Should Dan Rather be worried?
He did, but I'm guessing they just discarded it.
Remember -- Rock Hudson went to Paris to be treated, as well. Finally came out that he had AIDS. Maybe some loose-lipped frog will let slip what ol' Yasser died of.
I guess John Le Carre got carried away after toching his breasts...
In addition to the contents of this thread article:
Ion Pacepa, who was deputy chief of Romanian foreign intelligence under the Ceaucescu regime and who defected to the West in 1978, says in his memoirs that the Romanian government bugged Arafat and had recordings of the Arab leader in orgies with his body guards.
I guess his 72 virgins will be slightly different...
He obviously wasn't given enough money to educate himself on the causes of the disease.
