Border Inspectors Find Girl Sealed In Piñata

SAN DIEGO -- Inspectors checking the car of a smuggler at the U.S.-Mexican border found a girl hiding inside a piñata.

They said they've seen all kinds of attempts to smuggle people into the country, but this was an odd case.

Vince Bond of U.S. Customs and Border Protection said officers at the Tecate Port of Entry found the girl on Nov. 2 when they removed several piñatas from the car and one seemed much heavier than the others.

The girl, who is about 4 or 5 years old, was carefully sealed inside, but she was able to breathe. The girl's mother was curled up inside the car's trunk, and her brother, who is about 9, was underneath the collapsible back seat.

The three family members were voluntarily deported to Mexico. The driver and another passenger in the car, both American citizens, were not arrested.

Bond said the sheer volume of immigrant-smuggling cases far exceeds the government's ability to prosecute all smugglers.

Get caught bringing in a few illegals, slap on the wrist. Good thing they didn't have a joint on them, then they'd have had to deal with the U.S. soldiers fighting the WoD!

I don't understand the dearth of fines for mules and coyotes. They charge huge fees for their cargo. It's time for them to pay for their play or better yet, jailtime in their home countries.

"This is rediculous. SEAL THE FRICKING BOARDERS! "

Oh, no, that wouldn't be politically correct. Some tell us we are racist and worse for wanting to stop illegal migration. The true racists are those that defend a policy whereby hundreds of Mexicans are dying stuffed in vehicles and crossing a most unhospitible desert. If they knew they could not enter and STAY, they would stay home, and just maybe do something about their own country. The defenders of this illegal invasion are racist. They would rather these desperate people die than to admit they sanction slave labor as well as the total destruction of our social services at taxpayer expense. And no matter how hard we may have worked to elect Pres. Bush, we still get called "bashers". The coven will be here soon, to tell us we are all idiots since they seem to have the self appointed duty to hijack all immigration threads.

Why not? This is BS of the highest order!

Bond said the sheer volume of immigrant-smuggling cases far exceeds the government's ability to prosecute all smugglers.

That's because the government refuses to arrest those who are caught. It's called CAUSE AND EFFECT! For example, can you imagine what the rate of rape would be in this country if the government chose not to prosecute rapists?

But, for the sake of argument, let's take Bond's premise as a given: that we cannot imprison all these criminals. Were they fined thousands of dollars? (Or any amount?) Was their vehicle--used in the commission of a crime--impounded? Were they issued a summons to appear before a judge? How about "community service"?

Why is it that driving faster than an (often) arbitrary speed limit on the open highway carries greater penalties and punishment than criminally violating numerous Federal immigration laws that have a far greater negative impact on our country? I don't see anyone from the government saying that there are too many traffic violators for society to prosecute.

What about fireworks? Good luck to you if you get caught.

"SEAL THE FRICKING BOARDERS!"

This is only the beginning with Bush's amnesty plan on the table they'll be coming across the border in droves.

How do you get "voluntarily" deported? As opposed to involuntarily deported? I would think that all deportation is involuntary, since the offenders obviously wanted to be in this country...

It’s just a poor reporting, they were voluntary returned in lue of a formal deportation. I would not worry they’re probably in LA by now.

The car carrying the piñatas bore California plates and was driven by a female U.S. citizen; a man in the passenger seat also is a U.S. citizen. Their names were not available.

Neither will be prosecuted, Bond said, in part because of the sheer volume of immigrant-smuggling cases.

"The arrests of individuals smuggling people far exceeds the ability to prosecute all these people," he said. "The more egregious cases obviously will be considered for prosecution, but if there is no prosecution, we must release them."

People-smuggling ought to be added to the list of traffic violations. The smugglers should be required to pay a large traffic fine if they can't be prosecuted for immigration violations. Red light violations and carpool lane violations are at least $271, and people-smuggling is much more dangerous.

Even without a change to the law, they should have been cited for driving with two children under 16 not wearing seatbelts. The fine is several hundred dollars for the first offense and at least one point on the driver's record. The 4-5 year old child might have qualified for the 6yrs/60lbs requirement for a booster seat, too.

Too bad we don't give them a permanent tattoo on their forehead or hand when we expel them. Then they get clapped in prison if they return. Or on a chain gang work crew.

SEAL THE FRICKING BOARDERS!

We'll get to them later, but first I think we should concentrate on the borders.

There's an idea I could support! Who do we propose that to? City gov't? State gov't? Can it be done or is that interference in the domain of the federal gov't? I can just see the lawsuits...

How F'in wonderful that we didn't arrest the people who are illegally smuggling these poor Mexicans in. That will ensure they never do it again. /sarcasm

How about child abuse? Oops, this happened on Nov. 2, so they probably went with the Halloween defense.
