TV Ads Advocate 'Amend for Arnold' (Barf Alert!)
LA Times ^ | 11/13/04 | Robert Salladay

SACRAMENTO — Television ads supporting a constitutional amendment that would allow Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other foreign-born citizens to run for president will begin appearing next week on cable stations across California, a newly formed group based in Silicon Valley announced Friday.

The ads feature Lissa Morgenthaler-Jones, a mutual fund manager from the Bay Area and major donor to Schwarzenegger's campaign, telling viewers: "You cannot choose the land of your birth. You can choose the land you love."

It's the first large-scale effort to generate public support for allowing Schwarzenegger to run for president. The Republican governor, who was born in Austria, has said he would be interested in running if the law allowed him, but Article 2 of the U.S. Constitution requires presidents to be "natural born" citizens. He has not actively pushed the subject, but others have.

"Twelve million people have chosen America. Now America wants to choose them," the TV ads say, referring to the number of naturalized citizens. "Help us amend the Constitution…. Help us amend for Arnold."

Morgenthaler-Jones is helping finance the effort and already has a website — http://www.amendfor arnold.com — supporting Schwarzenegger and others who might qualify. Her group said the ads will run on cable TV in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Sacramento, Stockton and Los Angeles starting Monday. The size of the ad purchase was unclear.

The group has an uphill job: Public opinion polls show weak support for changing the Constitution to accommodate Schwarzenegger. Congress recently held its first hearing on the subject since the 1870s but did not advance any of the four proposals circulating to amend the Constitution. If Congress did approve the measure, 38 states also would have to ratify it.

Blue state fluff! THAT state (CA) needs to attend to it's own business and quit trying to amend the US Constitution.

IMO, Bill Clinton would have a better chance of getting
the Amendment limiting Presidents to two terms rescinded
before a foreign-born citizen ascends to the White House.

I have been trying to convince people that Arnold is only out for his own interests, much like Kerry is. This should not even be in the works. If he really had the countrys interests in mind he wouldn't even consider this amendment. Bad for the country and impossible to pull off. I don't think he will be re-elected, or at least I hope not. He has made things worse in CA not better.

And by the way, Arnold is supposed be a republican but I see very litte evidence of it. I think he only went republican because he knew he stood the best chance of winning the re-call that way. He has also said that, and this is not a direct quote but close enough, Everyone needs someone to tell them what to do. I guess we know who Arnold thinks is the guy to tell us!!

Better get to work now to stop even the hint of this before 2008, only because we dont know who will be nominated candidate and how far the GOP will carry this.

They were very much for this during the campaign, remember?

Sure. Why not. It's about time they start talking about making Vicente Fox the President anyway, isn't it?

Or how about Jaques Chirac?

Excuse me, but Arnold is the one who originaly suggested this in an interview during the presidential election campaign when he was asked if he would run for president and he repied that he would like to get the constitution changed so he could run. He is not going to come out against it because he is behind it.

"It's the first large-scale effort to generate public support for allowing Schwarzenegger to run for president."

It doen't even rate as "wishful thinking".

Isn't going to happen.

If Arnold were able to run for president, Kah-lee-for-nee-ya would vote republican for both his election and re-election. He's as popular as Reagan here in the Golden State. Don't know how fast 38 states would ratify the change, however.

TV ads back constitutional change for Schwarzenegger

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/C/CA_SCHWARZENEGGER_PRESIDENT_CAOL-?SITE=CADIU&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- A new Silicon Valley-based organization will begin running statewide advertisements backing a constitutional amendment that would let Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other foreign-born citizens run for president.

"You cannot choose the land of your birth. You can choose the land you love," Lissa Morgenthaler-Jones says in the cable television ads, scheduled to start running on Monday.

She is a Bay area mutual fund manager and major Schwarzenegger campaign donor who is helping pay for the ads. She also created a companion Web site, www.amendforarnold.com.

Schwarzenegger, 57, has said he would consider running for president if the Constitution allowed. He was born in Austria but came to the U.S. in 1968 and gained citizenship in 1983.

He hasn't pushed for a constitutional change, but the TV ads mark the first significant attempt to build public support for an amendment. While polls show Schwarzenegger remains popular with voters, the idea of a constitutional change is not.

The new ads aim to change that view and specifically cite Schwarzenegger: "Help us amend the Constitution. Help us amend for Arnold."

Morgenthaler-Jones' organization told the Los Angeles Times the ads will run in San Francisco, the Silicon Valley, Sacramento, Stockton and Los Angeles.

Four proposed amendments are circulating in Congress, but none has yet advanced. Constitutional amendments require ratification by 38 states after being approved by Congress.

A Schwarzenegger spokesman on Saturday declined comment on the ads other than to refer to the governor's past comments.

Schwarzenegger told the CBS program "60 Minutes" last month that he supports an amendment and would consider running, saying, "You always shoot for the top."

But he said his priority now is to focus on California issues.

Flashback to February
Schwarzenegger: Let foreign-born seek White House
He says longtime citizens should get to run for president
Sunday, February 22, 2004 Posted: 6:24 PM EST (2324 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger, making his Sunday talk show debut as governor, said that he and other foreign-born citizens should be eligible to run for the White House and that President Bush can carry California in November if he does more to help the state.

The Austrian-born former bodybuilder, in the capital for his first meeting with fellow governors, said he has not thought about running for president. The Constitution says only natural-born U.S. citizens are eligible for the country's highest office.

The Republican governor said anyone who has been a U.S. citizen for at least 20 years -- as he has -- should "absolutely" be able to seek the presidency. A constitutional amendment proposed by Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican, would make that possible.

"There are so many people in this country that are now from overseas, that are immigrants, that are doing such a terrific job with their work, bringing businesses here, that there's no reason why not," said Schwarzenegger, who became a U.S. citizen in 1983.

"Look at the kind of contribution that people like Henry Kissinger have made, Madeleine Albright," he said, referring to two former secretaries of state who were born in Europe.

Arnold is a conservative republican.

OK, now I have seen it all. I have NEVER seen "Arnold" and "conservative" in the same sentence, unless people are saying that he is NOT one. If he is conservative, then I am fascist.

As much as I do not want to see this amendment, I will say that George W. has a much better chance of getting a third nomination than Arnold does, and I wouldn't mind seeing W3.

W3/A1 Would you support Arnold as VP? Maybe we can pass the amendment to say that the native born requirements to be president do not apply to the office of VP, and anyone who has served as an elected VP is eligible to be President.

Regardless of whatever your feelings for Arnold Schwarzenegger may be, it would be insane to amend the Constitution for the sake of one specific person.
