MOUNTAINTOP, Pa. - A Luzerne County perfume factory is closing at the end of the year, leaving 200 people out of work.
New Dana Perfumes Inc., the maker of fragrances including Tabu, English Leather and Love's Baby Soft, will close its plant in Wright Township, said Peter Schreiber of Dimeling, Schreiber & Park, the Philadelphia investment firm that bought the perfume-manufacturing operation in July 1999
Dana Classic Fragrances Inc., which holds the trademark to the names and formulas and markets and sells the perfumes, will continue to operate - but officials were uncertain where the plant will be or who will manufacture the products, said Al Cowger, executive vice president of Dana Classic.
Cowger said that union president Jack Keiling was notified that the 40-year-old plant would close in 60 days. Neither Schreiber nor Keiling could be reached for comment Friday.
Two separate companies - New Dana Perfumes and Dana Classic Fragrances - worked together at the 99,000-square-foot site to manufacture, bottle, market, sell and ship the fragrances. The three contracts for purchasing, manufacturing and consulting expire at the end of the year and were not renewed.
Dana Classic, based in Coconut Creek, Fla., owns the Dana trademark and purchases the bottles, supplies and components used in the manufacture of the perfumes. Dana Classic, which is not laying off any employees, pays New Dana to make the product, fill the bottles and store the inventory.
That stinks.
Blue state.
Perhaps this will force Michael Moore to resort to soap, water, and deodorant rather than masking the stench.
People allergic to perfume will be so happy.
I am allergic to perfume. Cigarettes are okay.
Factories should be forbidden from closing due to strict capitalistic rules.
And I bet these 200 will cut down on their mushroom consumption!!
Yeah, it doesn't pass the smell test.
I need to find a bottle of English Leather to put in my hubby's Christmas stocking. It's what he was wearing 40 years ago when we started dating.
There goes the OL FACTORY......
Soup lines gettin' longer. Brother, can you spare a dime?
I feel the same way about British Sterling......
Ahhhhh, Tabu, that brings back memories of my high school prom. I saved my lunch money for a month to buy a bottle of that stuff :o)

I did that with the old Avon product called Occur. Almost everyone of my favs has fallen by the wayside. Loved an old Lucien deLong perfume by the name of Tailspin. Wish someone would bring that one back too.
LOL, it SURE DID!
This is the leftover of Renaissance Cosmetics which filed for Chapter 11 back in 98 or 99 - due to lack of any management
I have found several of my old favorites on eBay. They still smell the same. My daughter bought some Guess on eBay and was really happy with it. I don't believe they were knock-offs. Or were really good ones if that was the case.
My first real boyfriend wore Brut. Still brings back wonderful memories.
Second boyfriend wore Halston Z-14, another memorable scent.
That's a groaner...
They bought Heaven Sent then reformulated it. They ruined it.
Anybody having a problem linking perfume making to Pennsylvania...What does it smell like? Steel?
I always wanted to try to find a bottle of my favorite shampoo from many years ago, because it smelled so darn good. Don't laugh, but it was Farrah Fawcett shampoo. Does anybody remember that? It smelled so fresh and flowery.
No, chocolate.
I'm allergic to both~
Let's see, my first strapless gown (well, not exactly, it had little straps), my first upswept hairdo, my first corsage, my childhood sweetheart pulling up in his dad's car to pick me up. :o) Ah, the memories.
LOL....... them were the good 'ol days, I guess.
Well, I can't please everyone : )
You might check out a web site called longlostperfumes.com
A perfumer has collected recipies for old favorites that have been discontinued. My favorite is Woodhue which has been discontinued but I can an exact duplicate from that website.
Just damn.
What memories.
Loved that English Leather Inhale - Sigh... ;)
Ah, the good old days of taking English Leather "showers." Drat.
Maybe there's a market for Perfumed Mushrooms.
I do remember, my daughter liked Farah Fawcett shampoo too. I am constantly amazed at what I find on eBay. Wouldn't hurt to try.
If you look you can still find "Bay Rum" made by several different manufacturers. Far superior to English Leather.
Has anyone said that is stinks yet? Damn, I'm always late for these threads!
I tried to think of a witty response but all the good ones were taken. Actually I know the operation pretty well and own a neighboring plant just down the road. Know the Dimeling Schreiber and Park guys too. They are specialists in buying and restoring bankrupt companies. Guess this one didn't work out, although there was no evidence of it until very recently.
The Wilkes Barre, Scranton area is an old union Democratic territory, but only now in certain counties. Luzerne, where Mountain Top is, went only narrowly to Kerry, 69,000 to Bush's 65,000. The 69,000 for Kerry was only 58% of the registered Democrats, one of the lowest ratios in the State. Lots of hunters up there.
The economy in NE Pa. is a diverse mix of old and new industry. Coal went long ago and now the second wave of industry brought in 30-40 years ago with tax subsidies, is starting to roll over.
The work force is still old school though. Not many drugs, very low absenteeism, easily trained. It's a good place to have a facility. Don't try operating on the first day of male deer season though.
It's the end of the world......
Tabu has been around since I was a teenager. It was a 'big girl' smell that all the girls wanted to wear.
Thank you.
As I recall, in November of '64 there was a rumor going around that English Leather would be removed from store shelves before Christmas because it had been proven to be a sexual stimulant.
There was none available to purchase at Christmas, but not because it had been 'removed' from the shelves,, it had all been purchased. There was quite a demand for the stuff.
I remember Chantilly and Ambush too. But there was one that still brings back horrible memories. I had a teacher who was mean and nasty. I really think she hated us kids. She wore Evening in Paris and poured it on. The thought of that smell still repulses me.

The Vermont Country Store still sells many of these fragrances, and others which we no longer find on the shelves.
