Anyone know if he's outright retiring or just leaving the Times? Can he take Dowd with him...?

My guess is that he's too moderate for the NYT.

If I hadn't cancelled my subscription years ago, I would cancel my subscription.

Bad news. Safire isn't much of a conservative, but he is certainly a voice of reason. I doubt the NYTwits will replace him with anyone nearly as good.

Safire to Retire from 'NYT' Op-Ed Column

By Joe Strupp

Published: November 15, 2004 11:35 AM ET

NEW YORK William Safire, the conservative voice on the New York Times Op-Ed page for more than three decades, will end his regular column in early 2005, a Times spokeswoman said Monday.

"He's written it for a long time and has been talking to [Times Publisher] Arthur [Sulzberger Jr.] about this for a year and a half," said spokeswoman Catherine Mathis. "His last column will be Jan. 24."

Mathis said Safire, who also will end his syndicated column, plans to continue his Sunday New York Times Magazine "On Language" feature. Safire, who joined the paper in 1973 after working as a speechwriter for President Nixon, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1978 for distinguished commentary.

Who's going to be the token 'moderate conservative' on the Slimes editorial page? Christoper Hitchens or David Brock perhaps..

NYT is purging moderate liberals to make a clear path for hard left, socialist wack jobs. Who will be this "conservatives" replacement? I suspect they will try to get Tucker Carlson as his replacement.

You're guessing it won't be Coulter, then?

Anyone to the right of Michael Moore could serve as a token 'moderate conservative' at that rag.

Brock is a revanchist, kneejerk, crotch-grabbing supradented leech.

Dowdie still calls Hitchens 'Chistopher Snitchens' over the Monica thing, could make for some interesting lunchtime cafateria meet ups.. my guess someone like Fareed Zakaira

The only thing you can say for sure is it'll be a neocon.
