If, IF..Bush picks LUGAR as Sec State, who would Daniels chose as Indiana's next senator?
one man's opinion....

Posted on 11/15/2004 10:33:56 AM PST by ken5050

Sen Richard Lugar has been mentioned as a possible successor to Colin Powell at State. I think it's unlikely, but there is SOME merit to the idea. Now thatMitch Daniels has been elected as governor, the senate seat would be safe for the GOP, so the arguments for Lugar carry a little more weight. My question, assuming Lugar's appointment for purposes of discussion..who from Indiana gets bumped up to the Senate?

Politically, it's an interesting propositon. I don't think Lugar would run again, so getting a younger person "in place" is a big advantage. Daniels is very close to Bush, and they share a similar philosophy. Any of the Indiana congresscritters fit the bill?

i am still hoping that Bush appoints a few conservative Dems with R Governors in their states to some positions to pad the Senate. Like Lieberman to Israel, Evan Bay to Secretary of Silly Walks or Nelson to Secretary of Pet Frogs or something (you get the idea)
that way we can pick up a few Senate seats and get the Ds in total Defense

Unless I have had the wool pulled over my eyes, I think Don Nickles (OK) is a good Republican and has served for many years in the Senate. He did not run again, and Tom Coburn is the Senator-elect. Seems like Don is looking for his next gig. Anyone have thoughts?

No way does Lugar get SOS. He has publicly beaten on the Bush Admin over their handling of foreign policy. Bush wants a friend in State.

Good thought. 1) It takes out of the Senate a guy who, at times, has been less than conservative in the WOT; 2) It allows Daniels to put in a younger stud who would be tough to beat.

I would even see Bush naming McLame to SoS except that AZ has a Dem Gov. But if we could get Hayworth in McLame's senate seat, I'd let him have State.

Of ALL the Republicans, I trust LUGAR the least.

He always provides the Liberal-Media with fodder to attack GOP with.

If Bush Picks him then I have no doubt Bush would face a HUGE scandal in second term and Dick Luber would be in middle of it - on Liberal's side.

I'd rather see Bush appoint Lugar to the Dept. of Tumbleweed Research. Keep the ungrateful boob away from the State Dept. Promote Armitage, with specific orders to purge the 75% of middle mangement (mostly "men") that fantasizes about pulling a Monica on WJC.

Lugar promoted the Law of the Sea Treaty.

I wouldn't trust him any further than I can throw him... and that ain't far.

He's a globalist and not to be allowed making decisions relating to our sovereignty.

Bump! Just say NO to Lugar for ANYTHING.

Well, it would be nice to put him in something relatively meaningless - give his senate seat to a real conservative - and then fire Lugar a year later.

My money is on Stephen Goldsmith, former Mayor of Indianapolis. He served as a domestic policy advisor to President Bush's campaign in 2000. I'd say chances are that he and Mitch Daniels are pretty close.

Good article that recaps Goldsmith's political career: http://www.indystar.com/library/factfiles/people/g/goldsmith_stephen/goldsmith.html

As a candidate that has proven he can win in the city, he should be a great statewide candidate since Republicans do well in the more rural parts usually.

I would argue that the fact that he lost to O'Bannon shouldn't matter that much since O'Bannon was Evan Bayh's running mate (Bayh was LOVED) and most people genuinely like O'Bannon as well.

I think Condi is probably a lock for Secretary of State, so I don't see Lugar having a chance at that.

That being said, I think I remember Lugar being mentioned as Secretary of Agriculture in 2000, but the IN Governor at the time was a Democrat so we would have lost a Senate seat at a point in time when the Senate was in a 50-50 split.

Ann Veneman announced she is resigning as well. What are Lugar's chances of getting that job?

I don't forsee Lugar as SOS. He is a little long in the tooth, been openly critical of the Administration on some elemments of the WOT - along with the fact he is as exciting as watching paint dry.

As a recent former Hoosier..have seen Lugar's decline in what I believe to be mental and physical capabilities.

He's tenured in Indiana until he decides to go. Don't know why, can't think of a anything really important he did for the state since creating Unigov for Indy when he was Mayor.

Some thought that was a bad move.

I simply cannot abide Richard Lugar; period.

Richard Lugar is either too full of his own importance or getting senile, or a combination of both. He has to be Number 7362 on Bush's list of possible candidates.

If Lugar were somehow to get it, then I would not be surprised to see Daniels appoint either Marvin Scott (candidate against Bayh who is a black professor at Butler University) or Jim Kittle, chairman of the Republican Party in Indiana.

The odds of either of these gentlemen getting it is quite remote. I do not think that Lugar will leave the Senate.

One other thing: Richard Lugar was a Rhodes scholar. I have had enough of that crew for a while.

Lugar is not too far from Powell in a lot of ways. If Powell was an outsider, he would have been more critical of Bush. To me Lugar can do more damage in the Senate than in the White House.
