The classic defense which many who are socially liberal, yet somehow fiscally conservative is the old Mario Cuomo/John Kerry defense: I personally am opposed to abortion, yet I believe in a womans right to choose.
I have pondered over that flimsy argument more than once, and have always come to what I believe is the conclusion: It is a purely pragmatic position where one has an internally based view that abortion is wrong, yet does not have the internal fortitude to do anything about the wrong-ness of abortion.
The same was with Pontius Pilate. Christ came across his path one day, and this particluar Roman "governor" didn't really know what to do with Him, or the situation he found himself in.
Pilate knew that Jesus was an innocent man. Pilate stated to the crowd in the Holy Scriptures "I find no fault with Him." Yet that would not assauge the masses who were hell-bent on a crucifixion that day. Pilate took Jesus aside personally and asked Him "Do you not know that I have power to release you or power to have you crucified?" Jesus replied to him "Thou couldest have no power over me except it were given you from above. Therefore he which delivered me to thee is guilty of the greater sin." Jesus didn't absolve Pilate of sin. Pilate was guilty of sin when he did nothing to stop the murder of Jesus, even though Jesus, as the scriptures say, was "crucified before the foundation of the world." Pilate, as Jesus states was gulity of the lesser sin, though still guilty of sin.
So many today think that they can straddle the fence with their flimsy argument: I find no fault with this innocent unborn child! Yet, in the end they do the same as Pontius Pilate and state in a similiar way: I wash my hands of this baby's blood. But is it washed away?
Yes, indeed, there are many who could be compared to Pontius Pilate, and they are found on both sides of the isle at Capitol Hill...As well, there are many who could be compared to Pontius Pilate that vote for these politicians upon Capitol Hill.
Take the time to read this article which I have posted. Do some "soul searching."
Thanks for reading it.
God bless!
I always wonder why that argument is not accepted in the gun control debate, mandatory motorcycle helmets, seat-belts, smoking etc. etc.
Hillary, Osama bin Laden, anyone connected with Al Queda, the list goes on.
"It is a purely pragmatic position where one has an internally based view that abortion is wrong, yet does not have the internal fortitude to do anything about the wrong-ness of abortion." Perhaps the duality arises from the unspoken notion that banning abortion would remove a woman's right to self defense ... think about it; that's all that causes true moderates to continue condoning the wholesale slaughter, that and abject denial of the statsitics.
Good post.
Yet, regardless of why they have this duality and the reasons for this duality, they are still Pontius Pilate's when it comes to abortion.
And they probably still wouldn't change their position even if Christ were the baby in the womb.
Thanks. The Pontius Pilate's of this world need to be confronted with how much they resemble this Roman "governor" who lived long ago.
Don't give up ... Americans use technological advances to give themselves outs from irrational positions. The coming artifical wombs will change the perspective dramatically due to the termination of pregnancy at early age not being an automatic death sentence for the unborn. The partial birth arguments dehumanizing the alive little ones went over like a lead balloon in the recent months. We The People can and do change our minds on facts more than emotions, but emotion still permits a moderate to accept abortion for the emergency situation and thus persuaded not to stand against a wrong if it takes 'nuance'.

Well said. BTTT
Wait until those in our own camp figure out that the birtch-control pill causes abortions as well. SHock will be the first reaction, denial the second, guilt the third, and dismissal of responsibility the fourth. Then they will get more pills! We Americans are spoiled beyond our wisdom.
A very similar argument was used about slavery.
When a supposed intelligent person tells me they are pro-choice without my even asking it shows they are morally knee-capped. I can perhaps understand an abortion brought about by duress but not a person who wholeheartedly adopts abortion and "choice" as a philosphy
A very blessed article and a great analogy for this time of year.
By doing nothing, and even by paying taxes which support such causes..or by failing to vote for pro-life politicians, we are all guilty of the sin of genocide, as much as the German people who knew what was happening in WWII and failed to stop it...and yes as much as Pontius Pilate.
God bless.
Thanks for the kind words concerning my article. I just hope that the article opens the eyes of those who, unfortunately, are of the moderate persuasion concerning abortion.
