How the 10 Wealthiest US Counties Voted (Surprising Results, President Bush only took 4 out of 10)
Various sources | self

It might surprise some to see how the canidiates fared in the 10 wealthiest U.S. counties (2000 census). President Bush won in only four of the ten, comprising two states (one of which might be a bit shocking for some). So much for "the Republicans are the party of the rich".

Presidential election results for the 10 wealthiest U.S. counties. (winner in caps)

Teton County, Wyoming: Bush/Cheney - 5,124 - KERRY/EDWARDS - 5,972

Fairfield County, Connecticut: Bush/Cheney - 14,694 - KERRY/EDWARDS - 15,047

Marin County, California: Bush/Cheney - 26,141 - KERRY/EDWARDS - 73,946

Somerset County, New Jersey: BUSH/CHENEY - 67,505 - Kerry/Edwards - 61,550

Morris County, New Jersey: BUSH/CHENEY - 126,761 - Kerry/Edwards - 90,476

Clear Creek County, Colorado: Bush/Cheney - 2,467 - KERRY/EDWARDS - 2,899

Douglas County, Colorado: BUSH/CHENEY - 79,115 - Kerry/Edwards - 38,956

Hunterdon County, New Jersey: BUSH/CHENEY - 39,449 - Kerry/Edwards - 25,727

Westchester County, New York: Bush/Cheney - 153,241 - KERRY/EDWARDS - 218,142

New York County (Manhattan), New York: Bush/Cheney - 95,362 - KERRY/EDWARDS - 468,841

The NJ results didn't surprise me since I am familiar with those counties but they might shock some other folks. I was unpleasantly surprised by the Wyoming results especially since I think this was Dick Cheney's home county. Hope you find this interesting. Have a great day fellow Freepers....Enjoy !

That is definitely Dick Cheney's home county. It's full of transplanted rich Californians is my guess.

That's Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It's basically Wyoming's Aspen - a resort haven for people from the coasts. Consequently, it's going to be full of liberal immigrants.

I'd bet Teton County (Jackson Hole, if I remember) is mostly populated by people who want out of the mess they made in Hollywood. The only natives are those who clean up after the Hollywood-types.

Those Wyoming results are an anomaly. Because Wyoming has one of the lowest state tax burdens in the U.S., the place has become a haven for wealthy elites who use it as their "principal place of residence" for tax purposes.

Surprising?

How often does one find that those of financial means simply have no connection with the world in which those of less financial means live, work and play?

When one has jabillions of coin, it can be a little too easy to pass off any understanding or appreciation that taxes do make a difference to those who snip coupons to help make ends meet.

Marin County, California, is Champagne Socialist Central. It is the county on the north side of the Golden Gate from San Francisco. It is the home base of Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi. Need I say more?

The results in Marin show just how psychotic that place has become. The wealthy, unmarried men who have tired of the Castro scene, move there.

How did you define "wealthy counties"?

Were you basing it only on gross personal income, or average personal income, or all income including corporate, or ad valorem tax values, or what.

In Texas when we talk about "rich" school districts vs "poor" school districts, it turns out the the suburban districts where all the rich people live are the "poor" districts, while the industrial areas where the people live in slums turn out to be the "rich" areas.

Connecticut doesn't recognize its counties for anything so it can be tough to find county-level voting results. I suspect partial results from a few towns. WAY more people than that voted in Fairfield County!

Personally, I am surprised that the numbers from Somerset County were so close. My sister lives there and there are McMansions left and right. By one measure--households instead of per capita, I think--Somerset is the richest county in the country, wealthier than Morris. Somerset is wealthy exurbia, Morris is older and more genteel.

The results for Fairfield County, CT are incorrect - the totals are far too low. What you have listed is the total for the Town of Fairfield. CNN's site asks you to select county but lists towns in CT - snafu...

We probably have more hard-line leftists here than you do, but you have more reliable dead Dem voters than we do. In any case, the Rats never have to worry about how our two cities will vote, do they? Boston went 77-23 for Kerry (actually not as bad as I would have thought), but across the river in Cambridge the score was 85-13 (with two for Nader.) One of my goals in life is to meet one of those 13 percent.

Yes, even NJ has its red counties. Morris is mine and I'm proud to live in it.

But we didn't have as good a turnout in this election as we did in 2000. That might be partly because someone in the GOP GOTV organization abruptly cancelled one of our biggest "neighborhood walk" events the Sunday before the election -- in favor of having Bush/Cheney volunteers attend a dumb rally for GEORGE PATAKI in Morristown, NJ.

Why on earth anybody thought George Pataki would rally the troops, here in NJ, is beyond me.

Not exactly. As a 3rd. generation Californian, I have some insight into this phenomena. These people usually come to California from New York City and make it big in Hollywood. After they ruin this state, they move to Wyoming, where the crime rate is low, and then ruin that state. Illegal Mexican immigration doesn't worry me as much as New Yorkers do.

I offer in support to my observation, the ratio of Dems to Repubs in New York County.

A few years back, around 1995 my husband and I took the kids on a trip to Jackson Hole (we're from Mass) and it just so happened that the Clintons were coming to Jackson Hole for a visit...the whole place was jumping for joy...I was pissed because it disrupted our vacation with all the secret service etc...also, a year or so later, we took a trip to Marthas Vinyard, and low and behold, the friggin Clintons were vacationing there at the same time! The point is, these vacation spots are full of snobby libs!

Those 13% in Cambridge Massachusetts who voted for President Bush will never identify themselves as such so they can still live in Cambridge :).

So even if you meet them, you will not know that they are Bush voters :)

I live in Westchester county. I live in Yonkers which is like the red headed step child of Westchetser as it is a blue collar city, but I have to say, most Westchesterites are the most arrogant, snotty, self absorbed, disgusting bunch of people on earth.

I am disgusted by the oppulent lifestyles these people parade around and how piss poor they treat other people "below" them.

You know, I have actually noticed more Bush-Cheney signs and stickers since the election than I did before. I think a few are starting to poke their heads out of the foxhole. I live in the Back Bay, so you can bet that Bush backers are rare in this neighborhood. What was funny was that two doors down from Kerry's palatial digs in Beacon Hill there were huge Bush-Cheney posters in the windows several months before the election. But when it got down closer to the day, I noticed they had all been removed. I'm betting the neighbors put some serious pressure on whoever lived there. Or maybe Theresa just stood out on the sidewalk and bellowed up to them. You're right, though, the Cambridge Republicans aren't going to be coming out of the closet. We need to come up with a handshake.

I am a native New Yorker and agree. There must be something wrong with the water or something.

The wealthy liberal elite are the most damaging bunch of criminals in this country. You talk about "white collar crime?" These people are right up there with capone and gotti in my opinion. Because they appear to be more "respectable" than your typical Italian American (Which I am), no one ever looks at them as criminals.

At least the mob is honest about what it is all about.

Somerville wasn't quite as extreme as Cambridge, but the most Republican precinct in the city (out of 21) gave Bush a whopping 24%. Conservative, deep-rooted Catholic neighborhood along the Mystic River. There hasn't been as much turnover of real estate there.
