The ongoing shake-up at the CIA is a welcome development for senior Pentagon officials that promises to end the agency's below-the-radar opposition to some aspects of President Bush's war on terrorism.
Defense Department sources privately complained that parts of the CIA's entrenched bureaucracy of analysts opposed the military's large role in a war against al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.
Before the September 11 attacks, the CIA had the lead in hunting al Qaeda. Afterward, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld took over that role and put the military on a terrorist-hunting mission that trespassed on some CIA roles.
"Let's just say that a lot of folks over there were still committed to a pre-9/11 way of doing things," said a Pentagon adviser who has played a significant role in forming counterterror policy. "It still hasn't changed."
The adviser added: "They did not want to combine capabilities within the CIA that could improve their analysis and operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere."
A former senior Pentagon policy-maker said that in discussions with the CIA some analysts left the impression they still did not realize al Qaeda's growing threat

Tommy Franks wouldn't enrage the lefties the way Wolfowitz would!
Yeah, but I'd rather have a crew-cut sporting, former general than a non-military metrosexual like Wolfowitz. He reminds me of an older version of Tucker Carlson. Spends too much time on his hair for me to trust.
The CIA has been long overdue (others not excluded) for a major overhaul. Even the average citizen who is not politically ignorant, has known this for some time. And finally it is coming about. And is the notorious squealing left trying to make this effort out as something evil...as they always do...the miserable losers.
The CIA indeed did/does have some very bad seeds in it. Don't remember his name, but one loser was recently ousted who had done alot of political and security damage to the country and the administration. This has been one of the big problems of the agency...again like anything that does not get the right kind of attention (ala the Clintoon debacle) for a long time.
We should look ahead to some very positive changes...the world is NOW VERY DIFFERENT SINCE 9/11 --- (not profound I know) and we need different people with different committments to carry out a war against a very cowardly and covert enemy.
Go GWB --- CLEAN HOUSE!!!!!
The Defense Department is so larded up with leftist bureaucrats, it's a wonder anything gets done.
Yes, but unlike the CIA, the penties jump when Rumsfeld gives the order.
My son-in-law used to work in the Pentagon when he was on active duty and said that the waste and burgeoning staffs was terrible.
His office was right across the corridor from Powell's and he said that Powell was a pompous ass, which is probably true.
Perfumed dandies at CIA need to be shown the door. Been there too long.
Out with the pre 9/11 ilk and in with the post 9/11 crowd.
ousting the Clintonistas
BTTT
They're loosing "their" moles
