MARIETTA, Ga. Two 13-year-old middle school girls were held on assault charges Wednesday after being accused of serving poisoned cake to about a dozen students who became ill and went to a hospital.
Lawyers for the two seventh graders said the cake was a prank, and that they had no intention to harm anyone. Lab tests showed the icing on the cornbread cake contained an expired prescription drug, bleach, clay and tabasco sauce.
"They took it into the cafeteria at lunch time and began passing it out to students, just whoever would take a piece," said Jay Dillon, spokesman for the Cobb County School District in suburban Atlanta.
Some of the students started vomiting after eating the cake Tuesday, officials said. Eleven students, mostly seventh graders, were treated at a hospital and released, Dillon said.
"There was some hysteria, from what I understand," Detective Wayne Delk said.
The 13-year-old girls appeared Wednesday before a Juvenile Court judge who refused their attorneys' request to allow them to go home. The judge will reconsider the request on Friday.
Police said one of the teens was charged with 12 counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit murder, among other charges. The other girl was charged with the same 12 aggravated assault charges.
In addition to the charges, Dillon said the girls will be suspended and could be expelled.
"We don't understand why they would have done something like this," Dillon said. "It's certainly something more serious than a prank."

Good judge.
I know I did a lot of stupid things at that age but I never tried to poison anybody.
We've got a fat chance of accomplishing your tagline, but I must say that these two ladies are my favorites!
I can only imagine what great things could be accomplished if these women would get into politics. It seems that the Republican women in Congress are as liberal as the DemocRATs. Snowe and Collins come to mind.

And to think they banned "Lawn Darts" because they were too dangerous for kids this age. Well, you just never know, eh?!
Lawyers said it was a prank? When is attempted murder a prank?
On local Atlanta news last night they interviewed the father of one of the girls who did the poisoning. He was claiming his daughter suffers from some condition that puts her in the "special needs" catagory. He said the condition affects her verbal skills. She didn't mean "bleach" when she told kids that ate the cake that it had bleach in it. (This was before the lab test came in).
Say what?????????? I guess that's why she poisoned her friends.
So obviously this girl will claim she was a victim too because she has special needs.
Gee. I even did a search for that particular headline. Pull away.
The father [of one of the perps] said his daughter was diagnosed this summer with Asperger's syndrome and doctors told him the girl should not be in a conventional school setting. The syndrome is an autism-related condition characterized by deficiencies in social and communication skills that was first recognized as a disability a decade ago.
No, ya think?
Hopefully now the poor little tyke is going enjoy a nice long conventional jail setting.
The worst thing i did was put a drop everyday of liquid soap in my science teachers coffee trying to give him the runs!
How utterly ridiculous.
I always find that searching for a single significant keyword, like "cake," finds the dupes better than trying to search for the whole headline. Since stories often run in multiple outlets, headlines change, but the key words usually don't. No biggie.
Her affliction didn't prevent her from following a recipe...for the cake, I mean. The frosting was definitely culinary art.
Barf Alert!
Indeed.
(shaking my head)
I wonder if they saw the movie "Heathers".
What about MY special needs?
I gave my little brother tabasco sauce when i was 9 years old. Thought I would come clean after all these years.
Sounds mighty tasty.

Father speaks out
After a court hearing Wednesday, the father of one of the teens said his daughter suffers from Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism that causes her to say inappropriate things and causes difficulty in relating to others.
"My hope is that this will be an opportunity for my daughter to get help . . . and to be put in a special classroom so that she can function," the father said.
He said he doesn't believe the girls intended to harm anyone.
"From my knowledge of the case there is no evidence of anyone's intent to murder or to create any kind of terrorist act," he said. "These are 13-year-olds. It's a horrible prank."
On ABC's Good Morning America today, the father, identified only as "Alan," said, "These kids are not Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold," referring to the Colorado teens who killed 12 students and a teacher before taking their own lives at Columbine High School in 1999.
"These are two 13-year-old girls who had extreme bad judgement in what was funny and what was acceptable."
The father said he has "faith in the juvenile justice system in finding out how best to treat these children."
"The school knew about her problems with judgement, and up until Monday, they had a [teacher's aide] escorting her even to the restroom at school every day that she was there, practically, because of the diagnosis that had been made by school psychologists during the summer," he said.
"Lab tests showed the icing on the cornbread cake contained an expired prescription drug, bleach, clay and tabasco sauce. "
Cornbread cake???
How can a lab test determine that the prescription drug was expired?
Only could be expelled, this seems like a should be expelled to me.
Something terribly, terribly wrong today.
If she truly had asperger's syndrome, she would not have the capacity to be able to come up with a scheme like that. My son has asperger's syndrome. Let me give you an example of this condition. We are teaching him to cook. He was cooking a t.v. dinner. He said" now i have to stir the potatoes" and put it back in for 7 minutes." I said, "but Josh, you don't eat the potatoes". It never occured to him to not follow the instructions on the package. I'm not buying her "diagnosis".
I wonder if satan worship or other occultism was in any way involved.
exactly, I'm expecting now word to come out that they are misunderstood youth, from good homes and good church-going girls.
cue the midnight candle-light vigil of teary junior-high classmates on the evening news in Atlanta
gag me.
If they just diagnosed her with Asperger's syndrome at age 13, then there is something very wrong. I'm not buying it, and i think it does a disservice to those that truly have the condition. So, she has asperger's, and she is able to go to regular classes? Yeah...right. And the school diagnosed her? Give me a break. My son is brilliant- he has a memory that astounds people. He also can't be in a regular class because he is so disruptive. you don't just "get" Aspergers, and you damn sure don't figure it out when your child is 13. i knew my son had asperger's when he was 2 years old.
Feel better now? :-)
My tag line is only semi serious. I realize that neither could ever be elected to anything. They don't have it in them to try to satisfy the masses, they would rather be right than President..
I just can't seem to get enough of either of them. They have the brains and the talent to say the things I can only wish I could put into words.
The only thing "bad" I can say about either of them is that they are both seriously under fed.
I like Michelle Malkin as well. I have Coulter's and Malkin's books and make certain they get passed around and read by others.
Especially the Tobasco.
They probably tested the food, identified the prescription drug and the cops checked and found that the drug had been prescribed to the household some time before.
Cigarette ashes in lieu of the called for pepper when I was forced to make the bleu cheese dressing. Blame it on my youth.
Glad I'm not in my forties anymore!
First, Aspergers in a girl is extremely, incredibly, fantastically rare. It's almost 100% a male disorder.
Second, my son has Aspergers, and the thought of putting something non-food into food would be totally incomprehensible to him. Food is what you eat, bleach is for clothes and the idea of eating something for clothes would be as absurd to him as a car walking on legs.
Tell me again why Hillary is running in 2008.
At least in her puffy, blood-shot eyes.
What do you do with these girls? Too young legally to charge as adults - what do you do?
Unfortunately, these perps will more likely get a short time in some sort of juvenile facility then be released to forever draw a government check....
Children like these are lost cases.
Jeez, what happened to just putting ex-lax in the chocolate cake! (or using sugar free chocolate, which does the same thing!)
Glad I'm not in my forties anymore!
lolol...good one.
A recent ex-girlfriend of mine has a brother who has this syndrome. He is around 17. He would talk video games to me forever if he could. He is extremely smart, but lacks some social skills. He is in a special school right now. The one thing I did notice was that he didn't have the best judgement when choosing friends. He tended to hang out with people who would take advantage of him. The "bad" kids. I don't think he knew it, he just liked having friends. Perhaps that is what happened to this girl? Although I have only heard of this syndrome in males. So the dad might be full of it.
Expel them, maybe some juvenile facility time. Written, spoken apology?
There are varying levels of disability. My son is 12 and in regular classes. He wasn't diagnosed until 9, but we knew he was "unusual" from the time he was 3.
I could see my son getting really mad and WANTING to make the other kids sick to get back at them. He's much too anxious to carry it out though. He ends up in the fetal position on the floor if detention is even a possibility.
Sorry, I see this condition through experience with my son, which leads me to generalize. I was always told my son was extremely high functioning, but if your son can be mainstreamed, that gives me hope for future.
Oh, not a problem at all! My son is rather average as far as schoolwork goes. He is highly interested in history and science so he does very well in those classes. But he really struggles socially. It's pretty bad. Sometimes I wonder, if he were more obviously impaired, if the kids would give him a bit of a break. As it is, they just think he's an irritating, know-it-all, dork.
