... met people like the sixtyish Norwegian author and psychologist who, at the annual dinner of a Norwegian authors’ society, told me she’d been to San Francisco but never to California.

How was she incorrect? :-)

Thanks for posting this, I would have missed it otherwise. The author has gone through all the stages of an American overseas for an extended time and documented them well. He portrays the European attitudes as well as anyone. Isn't it great to be an American after all!

Thank you for posting this.

The Europeans love to focus their attention on how much they hate us instead of dealing with their own problems while they can still be handled. I have this creeping feeling that chaos is about to overtake Europe. I just hope they don't start crying for us to save their rear ends again.

sorry - my hastily written smart-alek reply wasn't meant to apply to you.

I was just commenting, in a general way, on my pet peeve of posters who do just what I said.

I am having a rectocolic reflex and need to go the jon. I was going to print this article to read while I evacuated my colon, but I only had a ream of paper, so it will have to wait. I do want to read it though. Hell of an effort obviously went into its production.

"I was just commenting, in a general way, on my pet peeve of posters who do just what I said."

I understand.

I just found it odd that I replied to nickcarraway, in post # 3, asking why he had no comment on what he thought after posting this very lengthly article and I take the gaff from several persons here for having the audacity to do so.

Even one poster who indicated that the author was not a "rather be European", as I had called him, stating that I must have read a different article, when in fact the author admits to leaving the USA in 1998.

I guess I got a little touchy. ;)

Regards

Cheers and happy new year!

My job took me to Norway for a couple years. While there, I married a lovely Norwegian (And I was a bit harsh on Norwegian papers in that post).

Right now I'm in Møre og Romsdal visiting with the in-laws and enjoying the lovely weather.

Time to get away from the PC and join everyone downstairs and to light off a few hundred dollars worth of fireworks (though, yes, we also gave to the flood victim fund)!

Godt Nyttår!

Skål! Indeed, one of my Christmas presents was a bottle of Norwegian Akavit. Good stuff. I'm sad to say it was much better than the Danish Akavit my father favored.
