BASE = Beyond All Sane rEasoning...base jumpers are wanna be 'chutists that don't want to pay for flight time...maybe the wife and child can find a father that loves them...oh and I am sure there was no life insurance....

"it appears the fog and elevation were the fatal factors "

No actually I am sure that the sudden impact with the ground was the fatal factor...

Lunder actually saw Erich hit the ground. He attempted CPR but realized that Erich's neck had broken after attempting to tilt back the head.

Not wishing to rain on your parade, LOL!, but you run into "all kinds" of folks here at FReerepublic!

Having said that, let me educate you about what happens to the human form that slams into the ground at 120mph plus!

Ya see, I have scooped up whats left of 3 souls after they #1: fell off a biplane during an air show, and, #2: their shoots (both primary, and reserve) failed!

Trust me Bubba...Lunder wouldn't have had to "tilt the head back" to realize the laddy was abit outta shape...if ya get my meaning...

When did FReerepublic start sending out confirmation emails???

>>When did FReerepublic start sending out confirmation emails???<<

I, my hubby, my nephew nor his wife, ever got a confirmation.

Have you started sending out confirmation emails for new registrants? I don't remember getting one, and our new registrant -ErichsBro- claims it is a factor in what took him so long to post his angry reply to this thread.

But think about how your words affect the rest of us.

I have thought about it and, sorry, I just don't care how my words affect any of you. I don't understand why they would affect any of you, really, or why you believe our words are really any of your business.

If you don't want strangers talking about you after you've died, don't die in such a spectacularly stupid manner that you make the news...and if you are truly "affected" by the comments of people you'll never meet, your priorities are all out of whack.

He said earlier he was the brother-in-law.

That doesn't mean he IS the brother-in-law.

Or even a "he".

But the poster is showing the usual desire to suppress the discussion. How dare we talk about someone. How dare we form an opinion. Shame on us.

Yeah, we've never heard that here before. ;^P

Well, since I really have no way to prove to you, I can't do much else besides tell you that I am David Niemiec. Look me up. Send me a letter at my parents' house in Saint Paul. All I can say is that your opinions make you all look like a bunch of jerks.

If you'd like, I can scan in the card from Erich's memorial service. I really don't think that's worth it.

Have any of you ever lost a loved one like this? Have any of you ever felt pain after reading about him being ridiculed and made fun of? People who think they have it all figured out, posting inane comments that demean his good name? Saying that HE NEVER LOVED HIS WIFE AND SON?!?!?! This speaks volumes about the world we live in. I don't give a damn about your personal opinions on why BASE is such a bad idea. I loved my brother-in-law and I am ashamed to see his name sullied by the likes of all of you. Take just 5 minutes and think about how I feel.

You don't believe I was given a confirmation email? Re-register under a different email address. See for yourself. You'll find that everything I'm saying is absolutely true.

Furthermore, when Erich impacted the ground, his canopy was partially inflated. The newspaper reports screwed up the story. It was a TANDEM jump. Check www.blincmagazine.com for the full story.

"treating this like some kind of moron stunt."

We calls them like we sees them. Sorry that the guy died, however, your sister could have told him to cut out the stupid stunts. That he loved doing stupid stuff does not make it any less stupid.

The thing about base jumping is that your margins for error are far less than in regular skydiving. BASE jumping never appealed to me because of the margin for error, and it is something I never would go for. I know people who did BASE jump, and I know someone who got severely injured and was exceedingly fortunate that he didn't die. He misjudged the platform, and the winds, and didn't take into account the guy wires on the tower he was jumping from. The winds blew him into a guy wire and deflated his chute.

Every BASE jumping incident I read about that resulted in a fatality was usually the result of severe misjudgement. Jumping in the fog would certainly be a bad idea. I'm sorry this man died, but he made a really bad decision, and it cost him his life.

I was a skydiver for many years, but I was always choosy about the weather conditions, AND the people I chose to jump with. I know skydivers who were severely injured, or died on jumps, and without exception, their deaths were due to bad decisions. Not equipment malfunctions - bad decisions. Not to say that equipment malfunctions can't happen - they, do, but most of the time someone made a bad decision.

It's bad enough thinking about being one of the guys in the picture. But what about the guy TAKING the picture? Yikes.

My wife won't even let me climb Mt. Washington. Now I'm going to have to find a way to do it on the sly.

This is by far the best, most rational and respectable reply I have read. Thank you.
