KABC TV 7: Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES A fight between two Jordan High School students Friday led to a blacks-Latinos brawl that police said may have involved up to 1,000 people, including some gang members who came on campus for the fracas.
The scrap, which reportedly began with two girls fighting, possibly over something that happened yesterday, began during the second lunch period, officials said. Nobody was seriously hurt.

There were racial fights going on in Newark when my dad was a kid and Jersey City where my mom was a kid. This is NOTHING NEW. They shut down the high school for nearly a week when my aunt was there due to racial violence and that was in 1970.

"You have a child who wants education and other kids don't."
The father's quote at the end of the article said it all. For God's sake--what do you do with the losers who make life hell for the teachers and the kids who want to learn?

BTW: The racial group that was involved in (in most cases) instigating the racial fights that I spoke of happened to be one of the groups mentioned in this article. Hint: It wasn't the Mexicans.

War Zone ... Nobody was seriously hurt.Huh? Over 1000 violent teenagers converge on a school, which became a "War Zone", yet nobody was hurt? What kind of war, exactly, were you talking about!?

Up to 1000 involved. No serious injuries. No reports of weapons.
I'm thinking this is a good thing.

Man, what is with those people??????? Those people need to get a life. In Houston, I rarely see racial trouble. It seems like it is either on the West Coast or in the North, where I see lots of racial tensions. I know many Northern cities are very segregated. In Houston, schools desegregated quietly. Texas is not a so prone to racial tensions.

I am not saying there is no racial tensions, but I don't see it explode into a riot though. There was only one I can think of in the 1970s.

"...School police called for assistance from Los Angeles police, who donned helmets and quickly restored order on the 2,600-student campus in the 2400 block of East 103rd Street..."
"Capt. Sergio Diaz of the Los Angeles Police Department said several hundred people were involved, possibly as many as 1,000.
A youth said it started in one place, then spread throughout the campus. When all was said and done four students had been arrested, one for allegedly kicking a school police lieutenant in the mouth, and three for disobeying orders to disperse, said Ellen Morgan of Los Angeles Unified. Four students also were treated for minor injuries, as were three school police officers, she said..."

KTTV-TV L.A. (FOX) just did a live update for their 10 o'clock news. Nothing else happened so far today. They reported one student and one police officer were peppersprayed during the incident; one police officer thrown to the ground by a student and kicked (student has been arrested); more patrols in the area over night. No new news.

I am not attempting humor here, but you ain't seen nothing yet.
Hispanics have been taking over the projects around my neck of the woods. I don't know how it is everwhere else. Here, tensions are high.
Such conflicts as the one chronicled here aren't going to go away any time soon.

"...Five girls also were detained for fighting at Locke High School, about two miles west of Jordan. It was unclear whether there was a connection.
Morgan said nearby Weigand Elementary School and Southwest Middle School also were locked down, as a precaution.
By the end of the day, officers in riot gear were escorting students in groups of 20 or so off the campus.
Worried parents -- one woman sat crying in a chair and being consoled -- waited anxiously to be united with their children.
One man said he expects the situation to be resolved off campus. "We might as well look for it to carry on in the streets because that is the next step," he said.
Stephanie Roach just wanted to see her children.
"That's all I want," she kept repeating..."

Even one on one street fights would have sent many more to get medical care unless they're all a bunch of wimps.
The report seems overblown as to there having been that much real fighting.

Alipac, the broadcast you viewed was probably the taped story from a 6:00 p.m. local broadcast. Follow this link and then link to the video of the story on the right.

there is something really strange about this story. if gang members came to fight, and if 1000 students fought, why were there so few injuries? this doesn't add up.

There were reports that gang members came to the high school during the fight. When local gangs are better armed than LAPD, all "
street fights," especially involving "hundreds... up to a thousand" are relevant.
It's only overblown if you haven't heard automatic gun fire and cross-fire on your street on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening.

not really--except that maybe the whole thing was never as violent as the report was claiming.
if even one person had a gun, he should have been able to shoot somebody in a crowd of 1000, even if he was blind.

Believe it or not, it's hard to get guns on an L.A. Unified Campus. Metal detectors have helped.
The shootings take place on the surrounding sidewalks and streets.

LAPD were put on tactical alert according to the news. No mention yet of how many officers showed up at the school, but one got kicked in the teeth.
Still tactical alert is common here and simply translates into police being kept on-duty past the end of their shift.
