Police: Woman Killed Husband After He Threatened Pets (Bad Move)

Rochester (AP) Police say a woman went to a Beaver County police station and admitted fatally shooting her husband after he threatened to kill their pets.

Elsie Kost was charged yesterday with homicide in the death of her husband Edward. Police say Edward Kost was killed November 16th but authorities didn't find out about the shooting until Elsie Kost confessed to shooting him and putting his body in cistern on their property.

Elsie Kost had told others her husband was away at a hunting camp. But New Sewickley police say she told her daughter about the shooting yesterday and they decided to go to police.

Kost told authorities she had an argument with her husband and that he pushed and shoved her. Police say Edward Kost had threatened to shoot some of the family pets.

Authorities recovered Edward Kost's body yesterday.

An autopsy was planned for sometime today

If someone threatened my furbabies, was in the room and had the capacity to visit harm on them, I would drop them on the spot.

Threaten me? That's life. Threaten mine, that's death.

Threatening to kill the pets is a sign that hubby dear was unhinged and she was possibly in danger herself. She should have packed up the pets and left. (Said while acknowledging that I have absolutely no first hand knowledge of her situation or number and/or size of pets...)

I'll bet he did that once or twice in the past too.

I was married to an alcoholic, abusive man (WAS). Those of you who equate cruelty to pets with cruelty to persons are dead on.

I left him over the kids and the cats :-)

Now I own (or am owned) by one of those much-maligned dog breeds - said dog does not allow anyone to mess with me.

"packed up the pets" -- Unless the pets were about a half dozen 700 pound hogs, then they should have just run over the nasty-*ss husband.

This is a common tactic of abusers -- threaten to hurt or kill whatever is near and dear to the other person. I can't say I blame her -- she might well have been next.

"Besides that, a hunter? No regard for life in general."

How do you equate those two sentences? It's a improper generalization on your part. There's plenty of hunters that cherish life and love animals (myself included). To imply otherwise is outwardly disrespectful.

Life of a person over life of an animal? This was only a threat. Unless he was actually taking steps to harm the pets, she's in the wrong.

Kudos to you!
Those so-called evil breeds... I have always said: "Show me a mean dog and I'll show you a worse owner." I have lived around dogs all my life and have NEVER been bit by one, nor mine or other peoples'. I am not afraid of them, I respect them and I just give them their space and time to get to know me. I trust dogs much more than humans, and would probably do for a dog a few things I would not do for a human. Koo-koo? Maybe!
By the way, today I had one of the most awful experiences: when I walked out in the garden, I saw something in the pool, which I thought was a raven... we have had the most windy and cold nights lately. To my horror, it was a little dog, a Chihuahua! I cried my eyeballs out! I have no clue where the little thing came from and no idea how she ended drowned in my pool! I could not get myself to pull the poor thing out, so I asked a neighbor to do it. I called the number on her tag and am still waiting for a return call. Just horrible!

I heard this story on local Pittsburgh news (WTAE-Pittsburgh) and the wife claims he pushed her and threatened the pets. IMO, the hubby was clearly out of control.

I'd imagine the usual Pittsburgh high profile lawyers will step in to defend her, like they do in every controversial case.

The biggest hole in all of this (well, aside from the one in the husband) is that he's not around to tell his side of the story.. The sole person left is the one who committed murder, and has apparently had more than a bit of time to come up with an appropriate explanation.

We have police and courts for good reason; I'm all for self defense, but the self defense explanation ends when you can easily pick up the phone and call the cops. Yeah, if hubby came after her once she picked up the phone, drop the bastard in his tracks.

I agree. I don't hunt, mainly cause I don't like loud noises. But if it weren't for hunters here in Georgia the white tail deer wouldn't be nearly as healthy and I don't think there would be any wild turkey at all.

I am also a hunter. I eat what I kill and would rather eat wild game any day of the week. It hasn't been injected with antibiotics, growth hormones, etc. & is a much healthier source of protein besides the incalculable benefits of being outside & appreciating nature. I don't know any hunters who hunt just to kill - it's called wanton waste & is against State & Federal laws. Hunters are largely responsible for wildlife conservation & habitat renewal through the revenues collected by State & Federal licensing as well as organizations like Ducks Unlimited and the like - too numerous to mention. In the words of Ted Nugent "Kill it and Grill it."

postgazette.com:

A 60-year-old woman walked into a Beaver County police station yesterday and admitted shooting her husband and dumping his body in a cistern after he shoved her and threatened to kill their pets.

New Sewickley Township Police Chief John Daley issued a press release today saying Elsie Kost has been charged with homicide in the death of Edward Kost, 60.

Police said the killing occurred Tuesday and in the five days afterward Elsie Kost told people her husband had gone to a hunting camp.

Kost told her 25-year-old daughter, Melissa Kost, about the shooting yesterday, and together they went to the police station.

Police released the following account based on Elsie Kost's statement:

Kost had an argument with her husband on Tuesday during which her husband had pushed and shoved her inside their house on Cycle Drive. Edward Kost reportedly threatened to shoot some of the family's pets and he got a handgun. After he placed the loaded gun on the kitchen table, he walked outside.

Elsie Kost picked up the gun and followed her husband outside, where she shot him. Afterwards, Kost, who was home alone, placed her husband's body in a wheeled cart and moved him to a cistern at the rear of the property. She then placed the body in the cistern, where it remained until police recovered it Sunday afternoon.

To explain her husband's absence, Kost told other family members that he had gone to his hunting camp. However, on Sunday morning she told her daughter what had actually happened.

The body of Edward Kost was removed from the cistern, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.

I dont believe it. I have noticed lately that many freepers seem to be "losing it" or maybe we have just been infiltrated by DU.

I dont care if he threatened to shoot the dam animals or not. Being murdered is not suitable punishment for threatning to kill a animal.

It's just my opinion, but I believe that nearly all the posters think there was much more to the husband's previous behavior than these particular threats to the pets.
