BREAKING NEWS The Associated Press Updated: 11:17 a.m. ET Nov. 24, 2004VALPARAISO, Ind. - A Valparaiso High School student used a knife to cut eight students at the start of school on Wednesday, police said. None of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening.
The student who committed the attack was in custody and the school about 20 miles southeast of Gary had been placed on lockdown, Valparaiso police spokesman Michael Grennes said.
"At this time, we've got a number of students who have been injured," Grennes told The Times of Munster. "They've all been transported to the hospital and all the parents have been notified."
Jeni Bell, a spokeswoman for Porter hospital in Valparaiso, said the students suffered severe cuts and one suffered a hip injury.

knives don't kill people.
people kill people.
Prayer heavenward <>
Soon we will be reading about how the "system failed" this kid. Someone failed but it sure wasn't the system.
Was it an assault knife?
We will soon hear that someone once called him a bad name, which will exonerate him of all wrong doing.
What are kids doing in school the day before Thanksgiving?
Shouldn't the headline read...
"Knife Slashes Eight Students at Indiana High School"
...since society has become one were personal responsibility is no longer required...
Did the knife have a "Slash Suppressor", a bayonet Lug, and a Folding Stock?
If this happened at the mall, parents would demand their kids stay home. But they will send them back to school next Monday.
We'll also hear that he was surrounded, and someone tried to knife him first. Even though no one else had knives.

Sports utility knife?
Amen
Yup. Ban them ALL. And the plastic ones too.
The problem is the Knife Show Loophole. No waiting periods, background checks etc... Any Joe Schmoe off the street can walk into a Knife Shop or a Knife Show and leave with a dangerous Assault Knife... What about the Chil'run?
This is my 15 year old son David's school. They had a a half day today. He is not among the injured. I am told it happened in Spanish class. This kid pulled out two knifes and started slashing. Eight kids have been hurt and sent to the hospital. The school is currently on lock down. We have no metal detectors at the school. Police are on scene investigating. My hands are shaking and I am a nervous wreck, but my son is ok. Thank God.

Home-school
pj, I am so glad to hear your son is okay. That must be the scariest thing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire community.
Thank God your son is OK.
Yes, however, it isn't a possibility for many, unfortunately. It's just not.
Knife locks for all knifes!!!!
Valparaiso High School, my son's school. They had a half day today. The kid who did the slashing was overpowered by three teachers.

Thanks God your son is okay. Hang in there, it's going to work out.
I am thankful your son is OK! Hugs to you and thankful prayers going up.
(Prayers going out for the other kids too).
Thank you. I am having a bit of a hard time right now. I am somewhat disabled with arthritis and no longer drive. Am getting news from friends in the know. Valparaiso is an excellent school with many things to commend it. There is usually a police presence, due to the fact it is a huge school. My thoughts are kinda disjointed right now, but my thoughts are with the injured kids and their families. I hear none of the injuries are life threatening, but pretty bad, nonetheless.

Very glad to hear your son is unharmed. Such a frightening experience! You have many blessings to appreciate for Thanksgiving. Take care.
If he can play basketball, he may have a future with the Pacers.
I'm glad your son is OK. Have you managed to get your heart out of your thoat yet.
Prayers for the injured.
That is precisely what is happening in the UK. They've banned guns, crime has risen, now they want to ban knives. Next they will be banning sticks and stones.
If only there was a seven-day waiting period for knife purchases...
Do you know the name of the slasher?
What are they going to do about fists and boots?
What are they trying to do? Lure an NBA franchise into NW Indiana?
The cultural marxists have gotten these results from the last sixty five years of tearing America apart from the inside out. I believe the tide is turning with the young people of today. The young ones we have in Iraq are the Best of the Best. They are on the level of the WW2 generation with the way they are defending America. God Bless them ALL.
Our local paper has listed the names of the injured kids who have been taken to the hospital, but not the name of the kid who did it.

Oh no. My God-daughter goes there. I know the school well. I have to get on the horn. Prayers....
Thanks for the up to the minute reports. And thank God your son is ok - you will be too when he arrives home. Prayers for all involved.
Please give up an update when you can. Praying with you.
I'm still a stammering, shaky mess right now, but greatly improved over what I felt earlier. Strange how the mind works. I found myself downstairs just know frantically making the chicken noodle soup I had planned to feed my always starving kid for lunch when he got home today.
I continue in constant prayer for the victims and their families. I had a scare that knocked my socks off. I can truly imagine how they feel right now.

These things just don't happen. There must be a reason for this sort of violence.
It was, if it LOOKED like an assault knife.
You forgot the part about the SUV. The slasher undoubtedly drove an SUV to school today.
Patty,
What paper are you referring to? I'm from Valpo and just heard the news. I'm glad that your kids are OK.
My kids will be going to Chesterton HS when they are old enough. This type of thing is a real shocker for that area. Especially after the suicide that happened recently to a Chesterton HS student.
I hope those teachers have good insurance, because the perp is going to sue them for hurting him.
Oh my - thank goodness your son is alright. I can't imagine how I would feel hearing about that!
Prayers to you .. and the kids involved.
Yeah, that's standard PC MO. I wondered if you knew from the grapevine.
I went to the Valparaiso Times online, I think they call it the NW Indiana times. Its on the front online page.
The addy: htp://www.thetimesonline.com.
I know how you feel. There was an incident not long ago when another kid snuck a gun into school. These are horrible and scary times.
