U.S. army member enjoys his food as he celebrates Thanksgiving Day in Kabul

US soldiers have their meals at the canteen in the US military base near the rebel stronghold of Ramadi. The canteen can cater to up to four thousand hungry soldiers at each sitting offering a range of food including the inevitable hamburgers. For Thanksgiving, the canteen plans to offer a score of different dishes ranging from prawn cocktail to pecan pie(AFP/File/Ahmad Al-Rubaye)

A US soldier shops at the PX, the name given to such stores on US bases across the world, the US military base near the rebel stronghold of Ramadi. 'We go where you go,' says the slogan on the store in the base. The shop is a little corner of America that helps war-weary US soldiers forgot for a moment that they are in the middle of the Iraq conflict.

Pfc. Roberto Cisneros, who was wounded in Iraq, shared an early Thanksgiving meal with his 4-month-old son, Michael, at Naval Medical Center San Diego yesterday. Cisneros said his thoughts are with the Marines in harm's way in Iraq. "I know I did my part, but I wish I were there with them now," he said.
Great Article here:
In a nation of plenty, many still feel unsatisfied

Writing about Thanksgiving, President Washington in 1789 proclaimed "Thursday, . . . of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation . . . and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us."
That is the attitude that makes our country the greatest and its citizens proud.
We Truly are Blessed in America...the SPIRIT OF AMERICA...still reigns!

To Citizen Soldiers a Song to Explain
How Proudly We Thank You for Deeds in Our Names.
From farms in the country, from cities and towns,
from places quite humble, from places renowned,
from fact'ries, from stores and from offices tall,
from service professions, from stores in our malls,
come citizen soldiers their country to serve
as full time professionals or guard or reserve.
From mothers and fathers and husbands and wives,
from children and lovers and friends in their lives,
our citizen soldiers depart despite tears
on missions of danger in spite of their fears
as selflessly, proudly, and bravely they serve
that freedom of conscience and Faith be preserved.
In caves and in tunnels where murderers train
unspeakable terror they face in our name.
With principled discipline, training and skill
in taming the instinct to kill or be killed
our citizen soldiers have honored our name,
so, proudly we thank them for deeds in our name.
They serve in the skies, and at sea and on land,
in mountains and jungles and deserts of sand,
on foot and in foxholes, in trenches and tents,
in tanks and on submarine mission descents,
in planes and on ships and on carrier decks,
in Humvees, and hangars and convoys on treks.
For risks to themselves in their battles with terrors
increased by attempts to use force without error,
for risks to themselves they increase by providing
assistance to those who for freedom are striving,
our citizen soldiers have honored our name,
so thank them we must for their deeds in our name.
So we and posterity freedom retain
barbaric regimes you confront in our name.
To you who defend us, we proudly proclaim
our pride in the deeds you have done in our name.
We thank you, we thank you for deeds in our name,
We thank you, we thank you for deeds in our name.·

CAMP VICTORY, Baghdad It's a mission that's been weeks in the making, and today, military chefs throughout Iraq are serving traditional Thanksgiving meals to American servicemen and women there.
Sergeant Major Eric Parris, spokesman for Multi-National Corps-Iraq, says turkey and all the trimmings, right down to the pumpkin pie, will be on tables from Baghdad to Mosul and even in Fallujah. Parris says commanders in Fallujah have gone to great lengths to make sure their troops have a little bit of home in their hearts and in their stomachs on the holiday, security conditions permitting.
Some units have planned football games and "fun runs" to mark Thanksgiving. And they'll get a chance to watch the N-F-L and college football games via satellite.http://www.wboc.com/Global/story.asp?S=2613410
Enjoy the day, guys, you deserve it even more than the rest of us!

John Zimmerman reads bedtime stories to his children, Meredith, 2, and Corryn, 1, with his wife, Jennifer, in their Bartonville, Ill. home Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004. Zimmerman, 39, an Illinois National Guard sergeant and Chinook helicopter flight engineer with Peoria-based Company F of the 106th Aviation Battalion who spent last year in a mess tent about 30 miles outside of Baghdad, will be surrounded by family this year but says his thoughts won't be far from the the nearly 183,000 U.S. guardsmen and reservists who will spend a lonesome holiday in Iraq (news - web sites), Afghanistan (news - web sites) and other military posts in the world. God bless these guys on this day.
I read the article, seemed like psychobabble to me. Just my opinion, though. I find it very difficult to get worked up over a lot of things, when I think of the sacrifices some of our fellow citizens are making so that we can enjoy our families and Thankgiving celebrations.
The people in this article all worked up about their cell phone functionality and such deeply need more than a therapist.
Heavenly Father,
Please wrap Your arms of protection around our troops, especially on this day of Thanksgiving. Bless them and their families for the sacrifices that they make to keep us free. Make us gracious enough to openly show our appreciation for all that our military members and their families do for us with their daily acts of selflessness.
We ask these favors of You as Your humble and contrite servants in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen
And our guys and gals still in Afghanistan!
9-11-2001 is unfinished business until we get OBD's fricaseed carcass on the platter - Word.
Thanks to all armed service people for what they do to insure that we continue being able to grant thanks!
How can we not be thankful today knowing these are the kind of men and women keeping us safe and free? The US is so blessed.

My hubby is Zimmerman's 1sg...F Co 106th AVN Chinooks...back from Iraq......he didn't spend last year in a mess tent, the mess hall was up and running...just a little mis-information.
Looking at this years photos of Thanksgiving feast, they seem to be housed in buildings too.
Hubby saw the pic of the Zimmerman's and about fell over....Im sure it was the AP's fault....Mike was in Balad and all the messes were up and running last TD by the evil empire, Halliburton........this year he is getting a real turkey instead of the ever popular Army turkey roll...LOL
It is a small world on the world wide web and here at Free Republic. You will have to share this pic with 1 Sg. Zimmerman and his lovely family.
