Murkowski asks her staff to quit
NEW START: Senator says they can reapply, but some won't be rehired

Murkowski

Lisa Murkowski said Wednesday that she will be returning to Washington in January for her first term as an elected senator with a revived confidence and such a strong desire to start anew that she has asked her entire 30-member staff to resign and reapply for their jobs. Some won't be rehired, she said.

Murkowski said her decision to start fresh with her staff doesn't mean some of the same faces won't be back. But Justin Stiefel, who resigned as her chief of staff in February to become her campaign manager, will not be returning to his old job, Murkowski said.

"Justin is looking for other opportunities either here in Alaska or in Washington," she said.

Stiefel, who grew up in Anchorage and was 28 when he took over Murkowski's campaign in February, was one of the youngest chiefs of staff in Congress.

At the time he moved over to the campaign, Murkowski said he was "smart, smart, smart," but there were persistent rumblings throughout the summer and fall, never confirmed by campaign officials, that Stiefel had been pushed aside in fact, if not in title.

*SNIP*

She'll have the luxury now of creating her own team, but the surroundings won't be so nice. Offices are assigned by seniority, and father Frank had some 20 years of it.

In Washington the other day, she had to suffer the indignity of a Democrat, Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, walking through the place and taking measurements for curtains.

The Anchorage Daily News (ADN) is an extremely left-wing propaganda organ. Sometimes it seems it two yards to the left of the Beijing peoples daily. It shows all the traits that have come to mark the feted left in that it is vindictive, prone to school yard bully tactics and generally livid that the Democrats had their clock cleaned on 2 November. I think an analogy to a rabid raccoon would be appropriate for the ADN in this case.

Is it any wonder that we're going to hell in a handbasket and government requires so much of your wages? These maroons have 30 staff to make mischief with? The country would be a lot better off if each congressman had 5 staff.

Justin Stiefel is a bright young guy, with a new young family, who needs to get into the private sector to make real money. Can't blame him, and a resource company or lobbying firm (read ANWR, Gas Line) would do very well in hiring him. He's well thought of throughout Alaska and by both Stevens and Murkowski.

I've been wondering for awhile just out of nosiness--do you know how tall Mikulski is? She looks really short to me, like 4'10". Even if she's taller than that, she looks super-short because of her build.

Curtains? Was Mikulski going to have a someone make a dress made for her?

Another thing, she is much uglier in person than in photos. Much uglier.

Yes, she inherited the job from her father. Didn't earn it, inherited it. But now she's acting high and might toward her staff. Figures.

Lisa's cleaning house... GOOD...
Would that other republican politicians would do the same..
Would George Bush would too.. Goss(CIA) is a good move..
But just a start.. How about a new FCC director. One that absolutely HATES sedition and treason.. Yeah just a start..

My recommendation would be a very very good spring cleaning in ALL republican politicians offices and committees.. Federal parasitism should really be a democrat disease..
Am I dreamin.?.. of course I am.. Dreams are cool..

She could win another 8 elections and that won't change the fact that she inherited the seat rather than earning it herself.

Right, but she was the nominee because daddy gave her the job. And if not for W's coattails, she wouldn't have won - because the nepotism didn't go down well with Alaskans.

Pretty mouthy, from somebody who's been a Freeper about 80 months less than me. You came in this past spring; I've been here since 98. Back then, you were who knows where - probably still kissing up to Clinton; you seem to be more attracted to power and people in power, than to principle.

Can anyone imagine a male Senator doing that? (Well, I mean other than metrosexual Kerry)

This particular Marylander regards Senator Murkowski as a much better representative of my interests than the current incumbent Stalinists, and hereby gives her and her staff permission to tip Mikulski over and roll her out the door next time she comes in.

I heard once that most "staffers" are basically mercenary, Washington DC groupies, with "in name only" political affiliation. Democrat to Republican to Democrat again.... doesn't matter. They are just career "staffers". I also heard that this arrangement allows lots of leaking, information trading, spying, and in some cases, treachery.

Personally, I would want a staff of people who I KNEW were all loyal, merciless, conservatives.

With MD now having a Republican governor, why did the GOP continue to give a pass to the silly Mikulski? Someone needs to do a psychological study of the people of MD. They don't (collectively) make much sense.

  1. MD remains a Democrat state. It only has a Republican Governor because the last Democrat administration was so corrupt it offended too many Democrats.
  2. Mikulski keeps a low profile.

Nope, she was the nominee because she won the primary. She won the election because more people voted for her than voted for her opponent.

She is now hiring her own staff to start her first full term -- and you call that "high and mighty"? How ridiculous can you get?
