ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- President Pervez Musharraf had the ears of the world for his groundbreaking speech. In the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, he needed to show that the only nuclear-armed Islamic nation was not a threat.
Wearing a dark jacket instead of his army uniform, he denounced religious extremism and vowed to fix the Islamic schools in his back yard accused of fomenting hatred, the ones that crank out militants the way Harvard churns out MBAs.
But almost three years later, Pakistan remains a country where promises come easier than progress. Indeed, travels through the dense cities and dusty provinces of this Muslim nation that relies heavily on U.S. aid show just how little has been done to reform education--both in the Islamic madrassas and the failed public schools.
In the struggle for the soul of Islam, few things are as important as education reform. Terrorists can be defeated in Iraq and Afghanistan, but if nothing is done to end the intolerance and the teaching of hard-line Islam in classrooms, militants will have a never-ending supply of new recruits. Nowhere is this more evident than in Pakistan, whose schools were described as "incubators for violent extremism" by the Sept. 11 commission.

Islam hardly has a monopoly here.
Charlie Manson's "family" had more soul than Islam.
Chicago Tribune is a wishy-washy liberal paper...naturally picking a humane characteristic in describing the "religion of peace.." This is a series of articles the Tribune is doing on this lovely bunch of savages..worse yet, these lovelies are invading Chicago by the thousands..
ANd no doubt being welcomed by the "champions of diversity."
I wonder how loudly they'll be trumpeting their broadmindedness when the maggots bomb the Sears Tower.
Fight them now, fight them later but FIGHT THEM YOU WILL!
And because Islam has no soul, in that it is the work of Satan, NO MOSLEM WILL FIGHT ON "OUR SIDE".
I hear you loud and clear...I work down the street from the Sears Tower and walk by it every day. Given the majority of our taxi drivers (which mode of transportation I don't use anymore)practice this religion of "love", I sometimes think the worst if they formed a circle of hate around the building and .....Regarding our diversity loving public sector here in Chicago, they are arranging "prayer" rooms in the public schools so these denizens of peace can face Mecca during prayer breaks and pray for our destruction. We're watching, though, yes we are....
""The soul of islam""???? It HAS no soul"
The great thing about this post is that someone saw beyond the apologetic headline, and exposed the false premise beneath.
The tactic of the leftist media is to start with a false statement, then try to build credibility with half-truths.
I'd call it "Ratherism".
Our schools are failed and theirs are failed for the same reason. Ours are overrun by communist activists, who at least have to pretend some allegiance to the culture of the kids' parents. Theirs are run by fanatics, who don't listen to anyone.
A big part of the problem in both cases is to get parents to show enough interest and involvement, and to overcome their innate skepticism, that anybody is successfully turning their darlings into worthless piles of human debris. If most parents in either place could see inside their teachers' hearts, understand their real goals, and the future that will bring for their kids, several million teachers would be hanging from the lamposts tomorrow morning.
I don't think Islam has been ensouled yet. It is just form without substance. It's like an SUV without a driver -- on the prowl, running over everyone and smashing into everything in its path.
It is the Spirit it lacks...
