Google: There were 5 forms of the Inquistion. They are the Episcopal, Legatine, Monastic, Roman, and Spanish. The Episcopal was first in 1184, in operated in France. Pope Innocent III set up the Legatine under the Cistercians in 1198. Pope Gregory IX set up the Monastic Inquistion in 1231, under the control of the Dominicans. These three are usually lumped under one term, the Medieval Inquistion. It lasted until the Catharist heresy died out (no pun intended). The Roman inquistion started under Paul III in 1542, Galileo was imprisoned under this group, it was the least active and the most benign. The Spanish Inquistion started in 1478 by the Government of Spain. They were looking for Jews and Moors who have converted to Christianity for political or social reasons. I have read the the Pope of the time had wanted to end the Spanish Inquistion but needed the support of Spain to defend against other forces that were after his hide. The Pope may be infalliable, but he can still be a failure as a human being.
