...heck, I remember when a Republican represented part of San Francisco in Congress (William Malliard), and Marin County was represented by a Republican in the state assembly (Bill Bagley). I suspect the current boomer/hippie generation will have to die off before portions of the Bay Area return to normalcy.

I'll top that. I remember when Oakland had a Republican mayor (Reading) which was just about 25 years ago. Also, Alameda County had a Republican in the US House within the last decade. It's hard to believe that Pres. Reagan won CA with 58% of the vote just 20 years ago.
The degree of shift in California is astounding, that's for sure. The 1992 presidential election seems to have been a sea-change election, and I can't quite figure it out. It can't simply be Pete Wilson's support of Prop. 187, or Republicans' pro-life platform. I have yet to read an insightful political scientist who has explained it. Cut off the Bay Area, and Republicans would stand a chance in this state. So, figure out how the Bay Area went into the liberal dumper, and that would probably explain the shift in California.

It's not really a boomer/hippie issue but rather the kind of people that have been drawn to the Bay Area over the last 30 years. There's a ton of gay people who have moved to the Bay Area as well as others who are drawn to the open, tolerant lifestyle. I also think that a monolithic liberal local media has virtually shut out opposing points of view. This combined with peer pressure has greatly reduced the Republican/conservative vote in the Bay Area.
P.S.: There's also the fact that the national Republican Party has become more conservative over the last 25 years which has probably resulted in Bay Area moderates leaving the Party.
