UN member states, staff reject call for Annan's resignation

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, under attack from a US right-wing republican, who demanded that he step down in connection with allegations of corruption in the now defunct 'oil-for-food' programme, has got a backing from several member states and a signed letter of support from the world body staff.

UN ambassadors of at least eleven nations, including South Korea, Pakistan, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, South Korea, Turkey, Spain and Italy met Annan on Wednesday to express their strong support to him.

More than 3000 staff members of the United Nations Secretariat have signed a letter expressing their support for Annan at a time when the organisation is facing "allegations about its integrity."

"More than ever, we support the Secretary-General in his balanced, fair and substantive approach," said a letter circulated in recent days through the UN's internal e-mail system.

"We also express our determination to continue to improve the workings and effectiveness of this Organisation. We can make the case for the UN and be resolute, while remaining true to our mission around the world - dedication to peace and development."

Thats great. Find the combined salary of those 3000 staffers and cut funding by that ammount.

Wonder why the US is so at odds with so many in the "rest of the world"? Could it have something to do with our policies? Maybe...but I'm sure it's easier to accept that "They hate our Freedom", right? Step outside your little box and look around...it's a big world out there.

If getting in line with the "rest of the world" means turning a blind eye to the biggest financial scandal in history, as well as the ongoing genocide in Sudan, then I'm quite proud that we're going it alone.

Welcome to FR. In two days you have made two posts. One supporting MoveOn.org and the other defending the corruption at the UN. I am well aware of what is outside of the box. It is the same people who opposed Reagan and said the exact same things about him. The US is doing what is right, and if that is not popular around the world, so what? The US did not become the greatest nation the world has ever seen by following the lead of Europe.

Is it easy for you to ignore the undisputed fact that tens of thousands of Iraqi children suffered starvation, disease, pain and suffering as a direct result of $20 billion oil-for-food fiasco? Their blood is on the hands of the french, german and U.N. crooks that literally stole food from the mouths of babies. NO BLOOD FOR OIL-FOR-FOOD.

Maybe it's because we're right and they're wrong.

In this photo provided by the United Nations (news - web sites), Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites), center, is presented with the Report of the High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change by Anand Panyarachun, right, chairman of the panel, and Gro Harlem Brundtland, left, a member of the panel at the U.N. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004. (AP Photo/Eskinder Debebe, United Nations)

Looks like a mighty thin report to me.. ;-)

Stepping outside the box... just look at the countries mentioned in the article. all are out for only the graft, despot protection and extortion of the host country of the UN. They have no fight over our policies. All they want is for the gravy train to continue. WE PAY for that gravy train, newbie.

Allegations?
What planet is this guy from?

I am absolutely certain that most members of any criminal enterprise will support their leader.
