Danforth Resigns as U.S. Ambassador to U.N.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - John Danforth, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has resigned after less than six months in the job, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday.

Danforth, a former Republican senator from Missouri, wanted to give President Bush a chance to move in a different direction now that a new team was coming in following Bush's re-election on Nov. 2, U.S. sources said.

Some former colleagues noted that Danforth, a moderate in a conservative administration, had expressed frustration in recent speeches in his home state about not being more of an independent actor and having to check with Washington.

The news came as a ``complete surprise,'' a U.S. official said.

Danforth, who turned 68 in September, began serving at the United Nations in early July, succeeding John Negroponte, who left New York to become U.S. ambassador to Iraq.

He is an ordained Episcopal minister who represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate for 18 years.

Just before being named to the U.N. job, he served as U.S. peace envoy to war-torn Sudan for nearly three years, and the humanitarian crisis in Sudan was one of his most passionate interests during his time in New York.

Sounds good to me. And "one less Episcopalian in the administration" is probably a good thing, too.

Just a topic for thought.

We should send someone with the right stature. How about a guy in a clown suit who sole role is to honk his (bike) horn and veto everything presented at the security council?

No, however, some are more liberal than others and for the most part, Episcopalian and liberal are synonymous.

No, I can't. He has never impressed me. Ever. We don't need him on the SCOTUS. Let him wear a clerical collar full-time and pick a replacement who will stand their ground in the unholy mess of the UN.

The differences between the Protestant denominations in the US are principally class-based. Episcopalian: upper class. Assembly of God: lower class. Baptist and Methodist: middle class. Presbyterian: upper middle class.

Everything from an indoor tree to a clown that will veto everything, now Neal Boortz. I hope the White House looks here to FR for suggestions we are all over this thing.

Where I come from, Episcopalians are considered "lukewarm" on beliefs. They don't have the commitment of Catholics but they like the pomp and circumstance you see in Catholic mass. They are unapologetic snobs. At least that's the case with the Episcopalians in my family!

"No, however, some are more liberal than others and for the most part, Episcopalian and liberal are synonymous."

I strongly beg to differ.

To make such a leap requires one to crawl into the heart and soul of another, something I am not qualified to do, nor is anyone I know.

One's faith and choice of where to worship is so personal, and made for a myriad of reasons. Labels are extremely unhelpful.
