UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - John Danforth, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has resigned after less than six months in the job, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday.
Danforth, a former Republican senator from Missouri, wanted to give President Bush a chance to move in a different direction now that a new team was coming in following Bush's re-election on Nov. 2, U.S. sources said.
Some former colleagues noted that Danforth, a moderate in a conservative administration, had expressed frustration in recent speeches in his home state about not being more of an independent actor and having to check with Washington.
The news came as a ``complete surprise,'' a U.S. official said.
Danforth, who turned 68 in September, began serving at the United Nations in early July, succeeding John Negroponte, who left New York to become U.S. ambassador to Iraq.
He is an ordained Episcopal minister who represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate for 18 years.
Just before being named to the U.N. job, he served as U.S. peace envoy to war-torn Sudan for nearly three years, and the humanitarian crisis in Sudan was one of his most passionate interests during his time in New York.
One less Episcopalian in the Administration.
They need to send Micheal Savage to the UN to be the new Ambassador.
So who's the replacement ...
Savage?
Boortz?
{nobody}?
Send a message GW.
Sounds good to me. And "one less Episcopalian in the administration" is probably a good thing, too.
Just what we need at the UN, another punk.
Don't send Savage on MY behalf.
Mr. T.
What about Rudy? That would keep him high profile and in NY.
Just a topic for thought.
May he be the last.
If Savage got the post, what is the first country we'd be at war with and how many days would it take?
Good riddance. One less Liberal.
If Savage got the post, what is the first country we'd be at war with and how many days would it take?
Mexico, Savage would attempt to close the borders by force!
Can you say: "Justice Danforth"?
I doubt there would be war, but he may kill a few UN thugs lol.
OK, I'm slow today...plus I'm Catholic. Is there a problem with Episcopalians I need to know about?
:)
Sorry to see Danforth leave. He is a good man.
We should send someone with the right stature. How about a guy in a clown suit who sole role is to honk his (bike) horn and veto everything presented at the security council?
I recommend no replacement.
Now THAT I can get behind!!!
That would be an excellent start!
Waco.
All Things Charred and Crushed.
Danforth is a liberal? Funny what people call liberals these days...
They should seriously consider sending Ann Coulter!
What a gal!!!!
On second thought, lets just send an indoor tree.
A good man? He whitewashed Waco.
No replacement and no more dues. We need to clean up the rats' nest called the "United Nations".
Kofi Annon is already employed there....
I'm not sure what "Episcopalian" conjures up in some folks minds...is one denomination superior or inferior to another?
LOL! Good call...
That's the best suggestion so far, however I DO like the clown idea.
No, however, some are more liberal than others and for the most part, Episcopalian and liberal are synonymous.
"Can you say: "Justice Danforth"?"
No, I can't. He has never impressed me. Ever. We don't need him on the SCOTUS. Let him wear a clerical collar full-time and pick a replacement who will stand their ground in the unholy mess of the UN.
I recommend no replacement.
BINGO!
Boortz?
Yeah! Turn on CSPAN and pass the popcorn! That would be one hell of a show!
The differences between the Protestant denominations in the US are principally class-based. Episcopalian: upper class. Assembly of God: lower class. Baptist and Methodist: middle class. Presbyterian: upper middle class.
LOLOLOL! Borders, Language, Culture, dammit!
Everything from an indoor tree to a clown that will veto everything, now Neal Boortz. I hope the White House looks here to FR for suggestions we are all over this thing.
Rudy just opened up an investment bank - I don't think he's going anywhere near public service anytime soon.
"about not being more of an independent actor and having to check with Washington. "
And who does he thinks he works for?
Where I come from, Episcopalians are considered "lukewarm" on beliefs. They don't have the commitment of Catholics but they like the pomp and circumstance you see in Catholic mass. They are unapologetic snobs. At least that's the case with the Episcopalians in my family!
Why not Zell? The U.N. needs a good dose of good ole mountain straight shootin'!
Sen. Zell Miller of GA would be my choice to replace Danforth.
"No, however, some are more liberal than others and for the most part, Episcopalian and liberal are synonymous."
I could see Zel. Someone else did too.
Wow Zell would be wonderful. We have a very deep bench for such a job. The only thing is; who in the world would want such a useless job?
And...?
Me too. Sounds like some folks here would like a Muslim Terrorist to take the position.
The whitewash of Waco not withstanding.</sarcasm>
Oh goodie. Stay in bed.
