Built to thrill

The top 12 must-visit new buildings, built in the past five years

By Cathleen McGuigan Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel Updated: 6:24 p.m. ET Sept. 27, 2004

October issue, Budget Travel magazine - Ten years ago, the idea of cutting-edge architecture as a massive popular draw was ludicrous—it was the domain of private residences and the occasional corporate headquarters. Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao changed everything: Now great buildings are popping up everywhere. What’s even more remarkable, many are open to the public. We’ve picked the 12 best of the last five years.

• Auditorium Parco della Musica (Rome, Italy) • Greater London Authority Headquarters (London, England) • Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati, Ohio) • Nasher Sculpture Center (Dallas, Texas) • Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (Fort Worth, Texas) • Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park (Chicago, Illinois) •Prada Tokyo Epicenter (Tokyo, Japan) • Milwaukee Art Museum (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) • Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles, California) • Jewish Museum (Berlin, Germany) • Museum of Modern Art (New York, New York) • Central Library (Seattle, Washington)

"Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (Fort Worth, Texas)"

Maybe from looking out from inside, across the "pool". But other wise whatever. Of course it doesn't help that I don't care for modern art. Much prefer the Kimbell or even the Dallas Museum of Art.

The most beautiful architecture in the world should be available for all to see I believe. A great designer/architect can facilitate good experiences for people. This selection of buildings is an interesting one. The aesthetics of a building are very subjective, however I do believe there are certain standards in music and architecture that are universally recognized as being beautiful.

I agree, I just object to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX being one of those. I love buildings that include designs other than the current Era of Big Cookie Cutter Cement Boxes. I can understand the need to save on building costs. But I feel for dignity and pride sake, an owner would put some money and effort on the design and architecture of his building.

Yes, the integrity of the owner and the designer/architect is all important. Greedy, myopic developers are a scourge. Every building has its reason for being. It all depends on what the intention of the building is. Horses for courses.

This is the Greater London Authority Headquarters (City Hall). It's on the banks of the Thames, near Tower Bridge. Pretty cool, not very big, though.

This is the new SwissRe building in London; I'm surprised it didn't make the list. Londoners call it the 'Gherkin'. I saw it for the first time 2 weeks ago, I like it. It really transforms the London skyline, along with the London Eye.
