(CNSNews.com) - Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) is calling on United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to step down over the growing U.N. oil-for-food scandal.
Ensign joins Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.), who is heading an investigation into the oil-for-food program in Iraq, in stating Annan should resign.
Ensign told KRNV in Reno, Nev., that while nothing indicates Annan has personally benefited from the scandal, the corruption that has been uncovered took place on his watch, and he should be held accountable.
"Billions of dollars intended to aid the Iraqi people through the oil-for-food program were stolen while he was secretary-general," Ensign said. "Kofi Annan must be held accountable."
Ensign added that it is a clear conflict of interest for Annan to continue leading the organization while the investigation continues.
The senator said that the money Saddam Hussein received for the oil-for-food program was illegally used to rearm Iraq and in essence is now being used to kill U.S. troops.
Coleman's panel reported last month it has uncovered evidence that Hussein's government raised more than $21 billion in illegal revenue by subverting U.N. sanctions against Iraq, including the oil-for-food program.
Coleman said Annan has stonewalled the investigation and refused to provide his subcommittee access to internal U.N. audits and interviews with U.N. staff members.
Both the State Department and President Bush have called for a full investigation into the scandal.

I just happened to catch Charlie Rangel Standing up for Kofi.
Oy. Why am I not surprised at this?
The U.N. is nothing but a corrupt organization of tin horn dictators sucking funds from the U.S.!
WE ARE THE FOOLS!!
Resignation's too good for him. In the immortal words of Tom Lantos (Soc-CA), "with an infinitely more distinguished public record than [his], Admiral Boorda committed suicide..." Time for Kofi to take a walk to the top of the building.
Drum beat...
Several dems have at least taken the "Let's not rush to judgement" position, if not outright defended Annan.
Gee, I hope none of them are caught with their hands in the cookie jar...
Did he call his critics "racist?"
Soooooooo, are you saying leave Kofi alone?
The calls for him to step down are spot on.
Then they can indict him (and others) once all the evidence is assembled.
And it will be.
All these clintonistas seem to have gotten talking points in their Christmas stockings.
How interesting.
I don't know. I was walking from the kitchen to the puter room, saw Rangel on the TV and decided to keep walking.
Isn't anyone else concerned that Slick Willard may end up with the job if Kofi is forced out?
heard that spew before..remember lewinsky and bubba...there will never be enuf evidence to satisfy the vermin..aka the rats and since this thing with annan is a black thing...rangel is leading the spewing
WHO is going to indict him?
I'm not famous, but I call for it too!
Actually, Charlie isn't leading the spewing, he's just the latest in a pathetic line.
I'm well aware of what happened with Clinton. You don't seem to understand this scandal if you think nothing will be done about it.
There will be.
Hey, that's my Senator!
Go John Go!!
Saw it too. This is Charlie's first tie out since the election..He's about given up. I don't think he runs again..
I'm not convinced that the money trail won't lead back to Clinton. They are as corrupt as Kofi and Co. are.
