We almost had them wiped out in'95 - de-funded, until our 'friend' Newt Gingrich stepped in and gave them all they wanted


Is that correct???

Yep. The bill converting them to private and fully defunding them was on the floor until Newt pulled it.

No, not correct ... there were and still are about 30 or so GOP moderates/RINOs that would not defund NPR, PBS, NEA etc.
too 'extremist' for more moderate members who would run for coer when "Big Bird" came to town. Them + Democrats were a majority on this issue ...

Gingrich and Co never had the votes, also they were ~2 votes shy of defunding NEA. The high water mark was 1995. Anything that survived that year survived period.
