A senior Hamas commander in Tulkarm, Rami Abed Teikh, 26, was arrested Saturday night in a joint operation carried out by the IDF and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency).
Wanted by Israel since 2002, Teikh headed the cell that carried out the suicide bombing attack at Park Hotel in Netanya in March 2002. 22 people were killed and 100 injured in the attack, which prompted 'Operation Defense Shield' in the West Bank.
During 'Defense Shield', Teikh received assistance from the local civilian population in order to evade arrest. He wore women's clothing to move about undetected.
In recent years he was involved in recruiting activists and setting up a number of Hamas cells, whose members perpetrated scores of shooting and bomb attacks.
IDF combatants from the Egoz unit and the Nachshon Battalion surrounded a house in which Teikh was hiding and ordered him to surrender. Refusing to do so IDF soldiers fired an anti-tank rocket at the house, forcing Teikh to come out.
During Saturday's operation in Tulkarm, six other fugitives were arrested by security forces.
Elsewhere in the West Bank, two members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine were arrested in the Askal refugee camp in Nablus. Security forces believe the two were a bomber and a dispatcher in the midst of planning a suicide attack.
In El-Khader, west of Bethlehem, Judea and Samaria Police and IDF soldiers arrested three Palestinians, aged 25 to 16, who admitted to perpetrating eight bomb attacks and twenty counts of firebomb attacks at Israeli vehicles and security forces deployed in the area.
In Hebron a man handed over his wanted son at the District Coordination Office. Over the last three months 20 wanted young fugitives have been handed over to the IDF by their parents.
In the Gaza Strip shots were fired at an IDF post near Rafah. No one was injured and no damages were reported.
Islamic Jihad fugitive killed
Islamic Jihad fugitive Mahmoud Khmeil was shot and killed by IDF forces when he attempted to evade arrest Friday morning, fleeing from his home armed with a gun.
Troops from an elite naval commander unit surrounded his home in Kfar Raba'a southeast of Jenin in the West Bank, and called its inhabitants to surrender. Moments late they spotted Khmeil, 25, armed with a gun, attempting to flee. Soldiers opened fire, killing him.
Officials said that Khmeil, who is one of the heads of the Islamic Jihad in the Jenin region, was implicated in numerous attacks against Israeli civilians.
Khmeil is responsible for both executing and directing explosive device attacks and shooting attacks against Israeli security forces operating in the Kabatya region. Kamil recruited a vast number of operatives to the Islamic Jihad infrastructure in the Jenin region. He also acted as a central channel for the transfer and distribution of funds and of information donated from abroad for the purpose of terrorist activity.
In 2002 Khmeil recrutied a suicide bomber, who was caught by Israeli security forces, thwarting the attack. Khmeil was subsequently arrested by Palestinian security services and was sentenced to a prison term in a Palestinian prison in Jericho, but he escaped from a number of months ago.
Elsewhere in the West Bank, security forces arrested eight Palestinian fugitives in Nablus, villages north and southeast of Ramallah and a village north of Hebron.
In the Gaza Strip, three mortar shells were fired at an IDF post, at a settlement located in southern Gaza and another in northern Gaza. There were no reports of casualties or damage.
Shots were also fired towards the hothouses in Netzer Hazani in southern Gaza. No one was wounded in the attack.

Not if wearing a burka. :( I doubt many Islamic women are being frisked...we can't profile or appear to single out any certain segment of society. I heard that the screeners are really giving stewardesses a difficult time though.
