ATLANTA - Nearly a million Americans now have the AIDS virus and the nation's ability to keep others from becoming infected still lags despite a government pledge four years ago to "break the back" of the AIDS epidemic by 2005.

The campaign, launched by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in February 2001, intended to cut in half the estimated 40,000 new HIV infections that have occurred every year since the 1990s.
However, the rate of new cases remains about the same, according to CDC data released Wednesday. In Harris County, statistics indicate the rate has declined slightly in the last three years. The county has reported more than 22,000 AIDS cases since 1981.
In 2001, the CDC's campaign focused on outwardly healthy people who did not realize they had HIV — about one-fourth of those infected.
But the agency found just targeting those people was not enough.
So last year, the CDC shifted gears, focusing on counseling those who knew they had HIV to get them not to spread the virus.
Please do not try to confuse a perfectly scary story with the facts. ;-).

You are right of course but, even on this generally well informed forum, you will not find many who agree with you. I happen to be one of those few.
I'm still looking for that really definitive photo of the HIV virus and any real proof that it is contagious and is the cause of any of the diseases categorized as AIDS. Haven't seen any of that yet. Do a Google Image search for HIV. All you get are "representations". Isn't that a little odd for virus that supposedly destroys your immune system? We should have a photo or two of this little beast by now.

The truth about AIDS is that it largely a disease that affects fringe segments of the population who get it due to risky behavior, like drug users and gay men. The story that the activists and the media concocted in the 90's that AIDS would come to white suburbia and affect everyone was nothing more than a lie used to frighten middle America into donating money for a cause that could be affected by just moderating behavior.
Add new borns to the list of innocents and I agree.
You are right. The only way to control epidemics is with quarantine, a public health technique that has worked for many years.
However, the up side is with abortion of leftists and AIDs taking them out, conservatives will be running this country for years to come.
It should be a way to bring back the concept of virginity until marriage. "OK, kid, you can have sex with anyone, but you might die a painful death OR you can court and marry a conservative Christian man or woman and have wonderful kids like you and joy the rest of your life."
IIRC, the definition of AIDS and ARC was changed in the '90s, and the numbers doubled overnight.
On the other hand, Aids research has contributed to overall medical research and resulted in a lot of new discoveries.
AIDS is NOT a disease, but a civil rights status.
