To people who have struggled for a lifetime to lose weight, the new drug called rimonabant sounds like a dream come true.
It will make a person uninterested in fattening foods, they have heard from news reports and word of mouth. Weight will just melt away, and fat accumulating around the waist and abdomen will be the first to go. And by the way, those who take it will end up with higher levels of H.D.L., the good cholesterol. If they smoke, they will find it easier to quit. If they are heavy drinkers, they will no longer crave alcohol.

"Obese people have more receptors for endocannabinoids than thin people, said Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, a professor of medicine at Columbia University and the principal investigator of a large rimonabant study in the United States and Canada. The drug does not completely block these receptors, Dr. Pi-Sunyer said.
"The idea of blocking these receptors worked in animals.
"For example, mice that were genetically engineered so they could not respond to endocannabinoids ate less and were thinner than normal. And when scientists at Sanofi-Aventis gave rimonabant to obese mice, the animals ate much less, lost 20 percent of their body weight, and had lower levels of blood glucose and lipids, risk factors for diabetes and heart disease.
"Rimonabant, said Dr. Jeffrey Friedman, an obesity researcher at Rockefeller University, "is the first in what I think will be a wave of rational therapies" that attack what has recently been learned about how eating is controlled. But with rimonabant, he said, "the issue is, what's the safety and efficacy?"
"The company says it has enrolled more than 13,000 subjects in clinical trials asking if the drug helps with
Sanofi-Aventis.....hhhmmmm, chart looks pretty good.....note to self - call broker......
What's that, a spinoff of Aventis Pasteur?
bttt
Hey, good idea.
Perhaps the market hasn't already factored this in.
- interesting.
You can bet the trial lawyers have.
Cool.
But I quit alcohol (I no longer will even take a single beer or a single glass of wine) by being part of a 12 step program, and I lost 60 lbs by walking a lot and eating small meals.
But still, a shortcut might be nice for some. And there's that additional 40 lbs I want to lose... :o)
That explains the pot belly.
Too good to be true?
Read: if something works this well, there just has to be some downside ;D
Good for you!...I admire your discipline and perseverance.
:o)
And I admire your sweetness and innocence.
:o)

What are you saying...eat less and exercise?!?! No, no, no...that's way too radical. I'm going with drugs and liposuction!
Thank-you my friend.
You're welcome.
They were recently acquired by Sanofi but retain their name. They make plenty of vaccines too.
Thanks for the info! Well, considering the number of folks I know who've been burned by new drugs, people might want to wait a bit before hopping on the bandwagon.
Note to Planet Earth:
The market has already factored this in months and months ago. The Rimonabant game is basically over. Also, in my view the drug, while interesting is basically flawed in that it is an appetite supressant acting on the CNS. A better approach to obesity would be to find a way to act directly on the metabolism of lipids. Key word here "AOD9604".
Over the next few days watch a company called Metabolic Pharmaceuticals:
Symbol MBP.AX on the Australian Stock Exchange or a lighter trade on the Pink Sheets and soon to be listed onthe NASDAQ: MBLPF.PK.
This company has what I think is a better weight loss drug in the pipeline and the Phase 2B trails are about to be announced in the next day or so. I am looking for a phenomenal move in this stock over the next couple of months.
For those of you lucky enough to read this, and with enough intitiative to check it out and maybe act on it, you will owe me a genuine thank you.
