I contacted this foundation after seeing it posted first on FreeRepublic. I asked them what specific items they needed and where to send them. Please don't forget the wounded, especially during the holidays. Cards and letters would be appreciated too.
Note this is the AMERICAN Red Cross -- not the International Red Cross.

I think the American Red Cross is sorting through them so don't seal them so they can check them out first.
Put them into a larger envelope addressed to the Red Cross. Then I think you can address the cards themselves to "Any Service Member."

I'm glad you pointed out it was the American - because when I saw Red Cross - my first thought was I wonder how much will really get to the soldiers -
The International branch is corrupt beyond belief - let's hope the American Red Cross can still be counted on - but the events of 9/11 are still fresh in the mind - if it hadn't been for O'Reilly the families of 9/11 would probably still be waiting for relief from the Red Cross - It's hard to trust them again after what went on - just my opinion -
There have to be other places that are set up to aid the military -
The Salvation Army is great for aiding - too bad no group is together helping the military from this charity - they can be counted on - Great record -
To: Pastnowfuturealpha
I agree with you.
I am going to look into helping the Servicemen but it will not be through the Red Cross.
Hell, they actually created the RED CRESCENT so we could go HELP Muslims. WTF!?!?! They can't take help from someone because they are the "Red Cross"?
F 'em. I'm sick of this crap, period. The Red Cross, or crescent or menora or Bodhi tree, or whatever they are called can count me out of EVER giving them a cent. If "Multi-Culturalism" is so damn important to them maybe they can like the fact that the RED CROSS seeks to help all people. If I was in a bad way and some Jewish Group came to help me, I wouldn't demand they take the Jewish symbols away. What sane culture would?
I thank Tonk for bringing this to my attention but I will be helping with Direct Donations. Never again will I deal with the Red Cross.
I don't care if certain factions are not bad. If they are not bad, than get them to talk to thier international brethren about thier insanity.

I would rather send gifts to these soldiers than most of my relatives! All the adults in our family are doing that this year....donating to organizations that support the troops and also adopting soldiers instead of exchanging gifts.

You can always send your donations directly to Walter Reed hospital administration and bypass the Red Cross.
I don't like the International Red Cross or the Red Crescent but will dontate to the American Red Cross. They help a great deal with disaster relief when no one else will.
Ensure your donation by stating on the back of the donation check that the money is to go ONLY to the wounded soldiers.
To: jwalsh07
I think the donation is great. Be sure to specify that the money is to be used ONLY for the wounded at Walter Reed and their needs.

Bush Highlights 'America Supports You' Program
By Donna Miles / American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Dec. 7, 2004 President Bush urged every American today "to find some way to thank our military and help out the military family down the street."
Speaking to Marines and their families during a visit to Camp Pendleton, Calif., the president called the holiday season of giving a time for the country to "stand with the men and women who stand up for America - our military."
Bush urged people to go to the Defense Department's "America Supports You" Web site to learn about private efforts being undertaken nationwide to show support for the troops. The site showcases some of the many ways the country is expressing support and appreciation for the men and women of the armed forces.
"In the last four years, I have seen - the world has seen - the courage, the skill and the decency of the United States military. You are a great force for good in our world," Bush told the group of Marines and families of deployed Marines.
"The American people know it, and they are behind you," the president said. "Your service and sacrifice has touched the hearts of our people and inspired millions to show their gratitude."
Bush named examples of Americans' support for the troops, from 15-year-old Shauna Fleming from California who collected 1 million letters thanking military personnel, to a husband-wife team who regularly travel to Andrews Air Force Base, Md., to greet wounded troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Vietnam vet Steve Cobb and his wife Tanya "welcome the troops home and offer whatever help they can provide," Bush said. Despite earning four Purple Hearts and a Silver Star in Vietnam, Cobb said "nobody but demonstrators" came to meet him and other returning veterans of the war, and vowed not to let it happen again. "I never wanted to see another generation of troops come home without being welcomed and appreciated," Bush quoted him as saying.
In Massachusetts, John Gonsalves, a contractor, heard about a soldier who had lost both legs in a rocket-propelled grenade attack in Iraq, then started the "Homes for our Troops" program. Bush said the nonprofit group builds and adapts homes for disabled veterans with special needs.
"John says, 'The war on terror is something the American people should all be a part of - not just the people on the front lines in Afghanistan and Iraq,'" Bush told the group. "He says, 'We have a responsibility to do more for our veterans who are out there fighting every day and putting their lives on the line.'"
At Camp Pendleton, Bush said Karen Guenther, a nurse, saw the tremendous strain put on the families. "Many spend weeks, even months, away from home, standing by their loved ones recovering at a military hospital. They struggled with the costs of food, lodging, travel and lost income," the president said.
In response, Guenther and other Marine Corps spouses started the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund to raise money for these struggling military families. In the six months since its founding, the fund has grown into a national organization that has helped more than 300 military families across the country more than $400,000 in grants, the president said.
"Had it not been for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, I would not have been able to pay my bills for the last three months or stay at my husband's bedside," Bush said, quoting the wife of a wounded Marine.
The president said these are a few examples of the tremendous outpouring for America's troops, and he encourages all Americans to express their support.
Bush said these examples represent "the true strength of our country" and the "hearts and souls" of communities who stand behind those who put themselves at risk to protect them.
"Across our country, Americans are coming together to surround our deployed forces and wounded warriors with love and support," the president said. "And we should be doing more."

If you would like to help the servicemen and women who are getting treatment/therapy at Walter Reed and other DC/MD/VA hospitals, please think about giving a gift to the Fisher House.
WMAL Radio in Wash. DC is raising funds. Fisher House is similar to a Ronald McDonald House, and allows for the family members of the servicemen and women to be near their loved ones, and their housing expenses are taken care of.
Here is a link. Click on the Fisher House logo and please make a generous donation:

I called Walter Reed today. You can send phone cards directly to the attention of the Family Assistance Center at Walter Reed. The man I talked to send PLEASE don't send money, just send the phone cards and they will be distributed to injured patients. The address is Family Assistance Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Ctr., 6900 Georgia Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20307. The phone number is 202-782-2071.
Though donations through other organizations are sometimes tax deductible, part of you donation goes towards their costs. This way your phone card goes directly to a soldier.

Exactly. The ones that use the donations to give themselves raises and build themselves nicer offices.
Anyone who would like to help a specific wounded soldier, say, LT Dennis Skelton who is at Walter Reed now for surgeries to repair severe left arm and left leg injuries suffered at Fallujah (he also lost his left eye), FReepmail me.

I'm not fond of the Red Cross either. My uncle told me that during WWII he was able to make to an aid station and the Red Cross was there with Cokes and snacks. He took one and they actually asked him to pay for it! He said that they asked for a nickel, he told them he spent all day fighting Germans and didn't have time to stop at the bank. Since then he never supported the Red Cross. He said the Salvation Army would gladly give the GIs what they needed but not the Red Cross. OMT, Chaplains usually accept donations for the soldiers. I'd send donations directly to the hospital. There's also a group called Fisher House which offers hospitality to families of wounded at Walter Reed. They'd be good to support, and I believe donations to them are tax deductable.

I'm not a big fan of the RED CROSS but they are doing something for the wounded at least. If you can name another organization that does things directly for the soldier, let me know. Fisher House is a good thing for the families but I want my donations to go to the wounded.

International Red Cross or the Red Crescent No one does. No one should.
I would suggest donations be sent TO Walter Reed, in care of the hospital, etc., bypassing the Red Cross entirely. For that to work however, and given security considerations, it would take a point man to handle the packages. And that would be the name on the address. Maybe somebody could contact folks, there, and see if there are any volunteers. Then those who don't want to send ANYTHING to a Red Cross address can still send needed items directly to those in need.
