Bush was 're-elected by Porsche drivers'

(Filed: 07/12/2004)

The backroom wizards who won the American presidential election for George W Bush have disclosed how they tracked down every last Republican, even in traditionally unfriendly districts.

Using market research more normally reserved for the launch of a new soap powder or soft drink, they drew up a database indicating the likely political persuasion of every consumer, based on car brands, hobbies and favourite television programmes.

Research showed that the most Republican car was Porsche Having found America's water-skiing, golf-loving Porsche drivers, they then persuaded them to vote. Bush strategists told the New York Times that they targeted advertising minutely, sending advertising dollars to small, sometimes, tiny niche broadcasters and media outlets - from religious and country music radio outlets, to video screens hanging in a chain of gymnasiums.

Their research told them that the most Republican car marques were Porsche, followed by Jaguar, Land Rover, and General Motors. Other luxury car-makers that scored well among conservatives were Audi, Lexus and Jeep.

Volvo, Subaru and Volkswagen owners showed a strong Democratic bias. In general, Middle Americans favoured US-built vehicles. Sports were also a key indicator. Republicans loved golf, fishing, snowmobiling, hunting, power-boating and riding horses.

Out of 34 recreational activities studied, only three were solid Democratic indicators: dancing, casino gambling and antique-shopping.

At any given time, Democrats were 15 per cent more likely to be watching television than Republicans, with top Democratic programmes being game shows and celebrity court cases.

Re: #30, I believe you.

These Brits are just too funny though, and I would have liked to see some of the political ads that actually resulted from this research. But being in California, Pubbies didn't spend a dime on my vote. Everything I did see I got off the net.

It's OK to drive a Porsche...you just have to lose the gas cap and stuff an old handkerchief in the opening.

They did not make specific adds to target specific audiences but they ran generic adds aimed at specific audiences.

For example if you watch Speedvision or the Golf Channel you would have seen Bush adds.Even in California.

My car shopping has just gotten a little easier. While I've long thought the Subaru Outback would be the sensible purchase, I've been hankerin for an Audi Quattro wagon. The Audi is looking more and more sensible.

Porsche, aka Ford ???? That's the only way I'm driving a Porsche.

I live in a single wide Mobile home on three acres of land.

Those Euro Weinies have us Republicans all figured out.

If it's the old style 7, maintain that thing and drive with pride for a long time. If it's a Bangle-ized 7, hang your head in shame for buying that ugly POS.

Hey, I like all of those things!

But *six* dogs is a bit much!
Unless, I suppose, they are little beagles.
My parents had a lot of them when I was a kid up in Pa, just about the time that you were a kid, as well. :^)

What about one dog and two cats?

Porshe? The Porshe owners I know are self absorbed democrats.

(BTW: has anyone seen the new Porshe SUV advertisement? It basically contains an emasculated husband with a woman obsessed with her "relationship" with her Porshe.)

My pride and Joy...a 1973 VW Transporter

Professors on campus assume I'm a fellow traveler, travelling around listening to Zepplin....until they see the back of ma' bus

Some of my favorite stickers include:

AU-H2O N64
Question Authority
Impeach Clinton
W '04
Choose Life
America: A Good Place, Despite what your Professor Tells You!

The profs. turn red with rage, I've desecrated their hippie icon.
They tear the leather patches off of their tweed coats and throw them at me....
