I read mine, too. There was a lot there the recruiter never mentioned, but I went ahead with it anyway, figuring it sure as heck beat working in a factory next to my mother for the next 20+ years...

I'm sure if "Stop-Loss" had been implemented in my case, I'd have been a little irked, but I would have gotten over it... ;0)

Thanks for the clarification. You'd think I would remember, as I stood before Art. 15/Capt's Mast twice in my illustrious 6 year USCG career. First one I lost 2 stripes, 1/2 months pay for 2 months, 45 days restriction and 45 days extra-duty. 2nd one I was basically "acquitted".

It's clearly spelled out in the enlistment contract. Of course, I must be the only guy who actually read the thing BEFORE signing it.

Well, Poohbah, that makes two of us (and I was only 17 at the time). Signed a few extensions since then, too. If I recall correctly, the operative phrase goes something like "unless earlier released or extended by competent authority." Even as a teenager, I understood what this meant.

PS - Jones himself was an immigrant of sorts (Russian ancestry, etc.).

I was just talking to a friend about this. He's a volunteer fireman and used to be full time. A few weeks ago we were discussing a similar coward and I asked what the heck are they teaching in schools these days. He informed me that all new firemen in our area have to sign a letter stating that they are aware that firefighting can be hazardous and may involve injury or death. There's actually people who don't know that.
