No Jail..but the brig will be open. Isn't this part of
the liberal mindset...take Government goodies, like some
sort of military duty in the tropics..but, horror, take
part in a war that is the defense of our liberties???
This is result of the past 30-40 years of soft soaping
by the media...NYTimes, daily bashing Bush, etc. and
look closely..this guy is a NoooooYorrrker...Jake

The DUh'ers are creaming in their jeans over this guy...

He also said on the news last nite that most troops don't believe in what they're doing. POS.

Paredes, the son of Ecuadorean immigrants, has done 4½ years of a six-year enlistment.

You take Uncle Sam's nickel, you dance to his tune and it does not matter if you like or don't like the band.
Court martial this punk. His only defense is that he does not want to go. This is different than those who have served their contracts (8 years in a combination of active, reserve, or inactive reserve) and do not wish to continue their employment with Uncle Sam.

Part II
"himself a veteran of a Western Pacific deployment"
I'm sorry, but what is that supposed to mean? I never really thought about it, but are you a veteran if you serve in a war or if you just serve in a branch of the service? My father never refers to himself as a vet because he served for 8 years during which there was no conflict and he was in the Navy too.
Sounds to me like this news outlet is just trying to lend some legitimacy to a person who doesn't deserve it. This sounds to me like the very first time this person might have to actually do their job they wimp out, and this news outlet wants to gloss over that fact.

The Navy doesn't use the term AWOL; Pablo is UA: Unauthorized Absence. After 30 days his status will change to deserter.
To: Petronski
No. What it boils down to is, he could face a Courts Martial, OR he could also face NJP (non-judicial punishment)... it just depends on various factors...

If this guy pulled a stunt like this in combat during WWII, he would likely have been shot for disobeying orders.

In that context, they mean he made a WestPac deployment. Big f'ng deal.
But anyone that served, including your dad, is a veteran.
