Well, to be fair, currently the E-5 level for the FT rating is manned at desired levels. He may have actually passed his advancement exams, but with no available openings, well, he gets on a list...

So he is from New York. Ever heard of the United States Military Academy? It is in West Point, New York. I lived 11 miles from the Academy.

Keel hauling, maybe?

He at least deserves respect for not running and facing the consequences even if you might not agree with his actions.

Oh, please. Consider the shirt the clown was wearing. He was salivating for the "film at 11" images of him being carted off in handcuffs. There is nothing in this jerk's actions deserving of respect. It makes sense that the Navy avoids doing things on his schedule, not theirs. If you think this individual is acting on his own, then I have the proverbial bridge to sell to you.

Of course that is giving credit to the Navy that may not be deserved. Let him finish out the remainder of his hitch in the brig and then DD him. Unless there is an obscure reg that still allows keelhauling. Then I recommend plan B.

What a dumba$$. Serving on the Bonny Dick he would NEVER have seen any hostile action. He's phony. A left-wing set up.

What a coward! Sailors aren't in much danger, as compared to the Army and Marines, and this pansy still won't go. He probably wants to stay home with his new boyfriend.

NBCSanDiego.com coverage:

"I'd rather do a year in a prison in the military than do six months of dirty work for a war I don't believe in -- and not many people believe in -- and get Marines in harm's way," Paredes told NBC 7/39. "It's sad to me that some people don't understand what I'm doing, don’t understand that this fight takes a lot more courage and that I'm fighting for the very people that they're putting in harm's way."

With the tshirt and everything and the fact that he had MEDIA on him is proof that this was all arrainged. I bet some liberal group offered this guy money and legal support and that they wanta trial of some sort to get more media coverage.

The best part was the familes of the men and women that are ON the ship callng this peice of trash exactly what he is.

Why hasn't he been arrested yet? Could it be that they are waiting 30 days so that he can then be charged with desertion?

The Navy doesn't use the term AWOL. Pablo is UA.

Chances are this guy would never come close to seeing any combat. He would just be there to support the ship who's giving a ride to the people who's going to be doing the fighting.

No insult on the Navy intended of course.

Even doing that much is more than many of us at home would be doing.

He's just making a political statement, and the press loves this kind of story.

One thing you can say for Kerry, he served until he was discharged -- as fraudulent as the terms of that discharge may be.

I don't understand. Really, why isn't he in jail?

OTOH, if he's in jail we have to pay his room and board. There might be better ways of f*cking with him.

I wish we had audio of that. Too bad they didn't have any tomatoes on hand.

He has the gall to say he is more brave than the troops fighting. He must really want his heinder kicked. Hope they plaster his mug all over.

And Article 87, "Missing Movement."

I missed a couple of movements. The Metamucil cleared that right up though.

I know that, and YOU know that, but how many people with little knowledge of the Navy know what UA (Unauthrized Absense) means? Most people, civilians, think it's all "AWOL", so why not use terms they are comfortable with?

Besides, I've been a civilian since the mid 90s, so neener ;0)

The last ship, the Bonhomme Richard, pulled out at 10:30, leaving without Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Pablo Paredes, who refused to board his ship Monday to protest the war in Iraq.

He was wearing a black T-shirt exclaiming "Like a Cabinet member" on the front and "I resign" on the back as he watched tugboats pull the Bonhomme Richard out of San Diego Bay.

Paredes, comparing his actions to that of recently resigned Secretary of State Colin Powell and other members of the president's cabinet, wanted to toss his military identification card into the bay but was told by officials not to so.

"I am 1,000 percent against this war," he said. "I don't want anything to do with it ... go to Iraq to deliver 3,000 Marines, and some who won't come back. I don't want to be a part of it."

Paredes said he has been told that he will face about up to 14 months in a military jail and a discharge for refusing to board the ship.

"After 14 months, I would have been true to myself," he said.

The Navy on the other hand....

The Navy, on the other hand, didn't make a big media spectacle, with lovely film footage of a guy being hauled off in handcuffs and leg- irons that would be played on the nightly news over and over and over and over...

He's not going anywhere. They'll arrest him on their timetable, not yours.
