Hospitals Cover Up LiveStrong Bracelets(same color as "do not resuscitate" bands)

Hospitals Cover Up LiveStrong Bracelets

TAMPA, Fla. - A hospital chain is taping over patients' LiveStrong wristbands because they are yellow — the same color as the "do not resuscitate" bands it puts on patients who do not want to be saved if their heart stops.

No mix-ups have been reported, but BayCare Health Systems officials do not want to take any chances.

The popular LiveStrong rubber bracelets are sold through the Lance Armstrong Foundation as part of the champion bicycle racer's efforts to raise money for cancer research.

"It could be confusing, particularly in the situation of a code or a cardiac arrest where people have to think very quickly," said Lisa Johnson, vice president of patient services at Morton Plant Mease Health Care, which is part of the chain. "We wouldn't want to mistake a Lance Armstrong bracelet and not resuscitate someone we're supposed to."

Hospitals use colored bracelets to quickly tell doctors, nurses and other staff special instructions for certain patients. For example, at BayCare Health hospitals purple bands mean the patient is at risk of falling; red means the patient has allergies. Not all hospitals use the same coloring system.

I thought those yellow Lance Armstrong thingies were the new medic alert to tell first responders the person is a pretencious yuppie.

It just dawned on me... Kerry and Edwards were wearing these Livestrong bracelets during the election... but I haven't seen them wear them after the election.

You don't think they were pandering for votes, do you?

So you attempt to make a political statement and it gets mistaken for a death wish. Don't you hate it when that happens?

Those two are a perfect example of the mix up.

The voters confused the livestrong bracelets with "do not resuscitate".

No apology forthcoming..

Kerry? Edwards? Two of the most sincere, authentic candidates ever to run for public office?

Although it is difficult to find the "Live Strong" bracelets, their popularity continues to grow among men and women. The campaign, which is a partnership between the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Nike, began in May in the hope of raising $5 million for programs to help people with cancer. Nike donated the first $1 million. The campaign has far surpassed its original goal, raising at least $22 million through the sale of the bracelets.

"I am only one of more than 10 million Americans living with and beyond cancer, so there are at least 10 million reasons why I wear my Live Strong wristband every day," Mr. Armstrong said.

The foundation sells about 150,000 wristbands every day on its Web site, which warns of a three-to four-week wait for the bracelet. The bracelets sold out at Nike locations in July, but are expected back in Niketown locations, Nikewomen stores and Niketown Outlets this weekend. ... WashTimes

I have a few questions. Was there a need for yet another cancer research fundraising organization? Does Lance Armstrong have some problem with the American Cancer Society, or did he just want to put his name on the effort? Where has the money gone? What has been accomplished?

Covering them? Why not just take them off? They remove other jewelry.

The funniest photos I saw were of Mama T wearing a $1 piece of cheap plastic for the sake of appearing "in touch" with the trendy liberals who have made them all the rage.

I haven't met a single person with one of those pieces of junk that isn't a hippie, feel-good and be trendy liberal.

Absolutely. Edwards romantic dinner at Wendy's as a tribute to their anniversery was quite touching, even if they did trash it after the photo op was over. I mean who would pass up a $200 per plate catered dinner.

I know a couple of cancer patients who wear them. It makes them feel better, so I have no problem with that.

Saw the edwardses......him and her on Larry King last night. When the old goat asked if Kerry had been in touch she said yes, but john elaborated by saying, yes, every day during the campaign.

Guess there is no need to pretend to care anymore.

How pathetic of the kerry's.

Dunno if there's a need but in 2003 77% of spending was research/education programs with, as I recall, about 5% going to salaries and administrative overhead.

I gave the foundation money, don't wear the bracelet, heck, I don't wear a watch, but while I'm not a big fan of the guy it would seem to be a better charity in terms of using contributions than the ACS.

I don't recall the exact numbers for ACS but my memory is that, by a huge margin, their biggest expenditure is overhead. I could be mis-remembering but I think they spend less than 20% for actual "good stuff".

Sure, a lot of flakes wear the band, but then Kerry also went to church and that doesn't stop me from going. I think it's a fairly good charity and while I don't give it as much money as I give the Salvation Army it's still on my "okay to give" list.

I have a few questions. Was there a need for yet another cancer research fundraising organization? Does Lance Armstrong have some problem with the American Cancer Society, or did he just want to put his name on the effort? Where has the money gone? What has been accomplished?

You can read the annual report here. It would appear that the Lance Armstrong Foundation has generated over $35 million in revenue since inception. Last year it looks to have spent $6.9 million on program services, $1.5 million on fundraising, and $.5 million on administrative costs. The annual report also details endowments and other donations that have been made.

I would suggest that, had Armstrong simply told people to go donate to the American Cancer Society, far less than $35 million would be raised by now. Armstrong's return from cancer is an inspirational story, and people are willing to donate money to the LAF because of it. So long as the donations are being spent wisely, what difference does it make whether it's LAF, American Cancer Society, etc?

We made high school football players remove them for safety purposes. Someone trying to tackle a player and getting a finger caught in one of those things could do a number on the tackler......

Exactly. And it's a fair sight better than giving it to a graft-riddled government agency, which would probably lose $6.9 million in a rounding error.

Actually, they were DNR bracelets. And the candidates were handled accordingly.

PAGING Kerry and Edwards. Here's your chance. File Suit NOW.
