How To Speed Up Firefox (Helpful Vanity)
Posted on 12/12/2004 12:45:50 PM PST by KoRn
Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:
1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.
If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

You can employ pipelining as well on Mozilla Suite/Netscape 7x browsers. They're based on the same open-source Gecko Engine build.

Thanks, I would love to dump Frontpage but at the moment I don't think I can drop 300 bucks on Dreamweaver to say nothing of the fact I need this website revised and up in the next 24 hours. LoL Life is grand!

Thanks, KoRn. Many times when using Mozilla FireFox, I'll click on a link and will get an error which says:
"Alert: The file "/" cannot be found. Please check the location and try again."
Anyone else with this problem and if so how to remedy?
In addition not all JPEG files will load using Mozilla.
Any suggestions most appreciated.
Thanks!

"Alert: The file "/" cannot be found. Please check the location and try again." Sounds like it could be a server side problem. The next time it happens to you, try opening the link with a different browser to see if it's a problem with Firefox. If the link works in the other browser, download and reinstall Firefox. This has never happened to me.

yes. I have DSL and Cable. I use DSL as my backup when/if my cable goes out(for work). My bandwidth on DSl is about 350kbps and my cable is about 3000kbps. Both use a modem.

Blink has become a freeware HTML editor. I like it because it has HTML pane, Preview pane and Browser pane.
Check it out as a sub for FrontPage.

I didn't state the problem correctly but you understood it anyway. In fact you stated it very clearly to anyone who has used a computer to print web pages. Happy to help. Though doing the same via FireFox print preview works too and better IMHO.

No, but did you know you can now buy a real cupholder for your computer instead of using the CDROM drive? They're either 10 or 20 bucks.I just saw that somewhere yesterday. It looks like it was ripped right out of a car dashboard. It even comes with a cigarette lighter! *ROFL*

I don't know what I did wrong but evidently my cookies were disabled or something. Keep getting messages on Firefox about URL redirection. IE works OK. Any idea what I did wrong. I even reinstalled Firefox to no avail.

Are you talking about the "properties" box? It should be there in the right click menu. Here's what you'd see for the image in post #93:

This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves. Just out of curiosity, why would anyone want Firefox (or any browser) to wait before acting on incoming info at all, much less have such a wait be the default preference?

If you don't mind, post the URL you are trying to access, and I'll take a look at it.

I changed my settings, but so far haven't been able to decide whether it is faster. I'm using a broadband connection.

"I changed my settings, but so far haven't been able to decide whether it is faster." It's very noticeable when you go to a site with lots of graphics, and frame/tables.

Yeah, since Firefox is open source lots and lots of programmers are constantly working to make extensions and improvements to the application. That's what I love about open source, there's a huge community of users contributing on their free time.
