How To Speed Up Firefox (Helpful Vanity)

Posted on 12/12/2004 12:45:50 PM PST by KoRn

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

I don't find "Options" available under "Tools" - nor anywhere else in the heading.

I was sorta hoping that there was a parameter displayed in about:config that would change the default size of the font . . .

Interesting. 'Options' show under the 'Tools' drop-down on mine. Are you using the current version 1.0.7? I'll do some looking around in the config and see if there's anything in there for Fonts.

Yes, just downloaded it a month or so ago. are the only menu items under Tools.

The only extension I chose to download is BBCode. Which, BTW, seems to lose its Settings and Custom Tags on the rare occasion of a crash.

I'll do some looking around in the config and see if there's anything in there for Fonts.
Thanks!

I'm seeing everything you are seeing on the Tools Drop-down list EXCEPT I have options at the bottom. You may want to try a un/reinstall and see if it shows up for you by default. I also checked the about:config and there are multiple entries in there for Font Sizes. If you can find which Font you are using you may be able to choose which font size you want for that type.

I can add you, but I'd like to be sure that you are requesting what you think you are requesting.

My ping list is generally tech-oriented. Firefox is part of that, but so are other tech issues--software, linux, Microsoft, things I find interesting.

If you're still interested, I'll be happy to add you to the list. I just wanted to let you know that it includes many other things besides Firefox.

I can't get the about:config address to give me a useable page. Am I the only one who can't make it work?

I just get an error page saying server can't be found. However, I just googled the about:config and I think I have found the right page. Let me give it a try. Thanks.

Are you putting "http://" in front of the about:config? If so, remove it. about:config is local to the browser is should not have a protocol associated with it.

I was able to find the right page after I found the Mozillazine page. I made the changes, rebooted, and am enjoying the faster service. Thanks much for your assistance.
