Former Claremont professor who faked vandalism gets year in jail (phony "hate crime")
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12/15/04 | AP

A former Claremont McKenna College psychology professor convicted of falsely reporting her car was vandalized and spray-painted with racist and anti-Semitic slurs was sentenced Wednesday to a year in state prison.

Kerri Dunn, 40, of Redlands, was convicted Aug. 18 of one misdemeanor count of filing a false police report and two felony counts of attempted insurance fraud stemming from the March 9 incident. She had faced anywhere from probation to three years in prison.

She had claimed her car was targeted in what at first appeared to be a hate crime while she was speaking at a campus forum on racial tolerance.

The allegations prompted college officials to cancel classes at Claremont's five undergraduate campuses the next day as thousands of students took part in demonstrations calling for tolerance.

During Dunn's trial, two witnesses testified that they had seen her drive her gold Honda Civic into the campus parking lot with the graffiti already on it.

Dunn continues to deny the charges. Her attorney, Gary Lincenberg, said he would appeal the conviction because jurors were barred from hearing testimony from an electrician who "clearly identified a man who should have been the primary suspect in the vandalism"...

Faking 'hate crimes' is really getting old

Bring back 'fairy tales'. Obviously these 'grown-up perps' have never heard of 'the boy who cried wolf'.

The allegations prompted college officials to cancel classes at Claremont's five undergraduate campuses the next day as thousands of students took part in demonstrations calling for tolerance.

If I were the judge, I'd throw in an order for her to pay a pro-rata tuition refund for every student for the day they paid to learn rather than listen to protests over a phony crime.

She would not get her voting rights back until the students were compensated for rallying and protesting as well as the police for investigating.

Since she is appealing, sounds like there may be opportunity to do exactly that for wasting further time of the court.

I disagree. I don't think she is very appealing at all.

Exactly. Too often, the full extent of crimes are underestimated.

Unfortunately, it looks like the only reason she's getting any jail time is for insurance fraud. If she'd paid to have her car repainted herself instead of filing a claim with her insurance company, she'd probably still be "teaching" today and be a hero martyr of the academic left.

I've been following this story since the beginning on Claremont McKenna's bulletin board at www.cmcstudents.com, and it's been a real experience.

Claremont McKenna is the most rabid liberal college in the Claremont system, and the message boards were filled with supporters of Dunn when she made her inital accusations. Anyone who mentioned that they had problems with her story was shouted down as a racist bigot, and all the other things you'd expect from militant leftist youth.

Pretty soon, when the FBI got involved and Dunn's story crumbled -- thanks to witnesses that saw her driving her self-vandalized hippie wagon into the parking lot -- the leftist posters there put on the 'Let's not jump to any hasty conclusions' while the handful of conservatives there started to snicker at the expected outcome. The college soon terminated Dunn's employment after the report came out that stated she was lying. At that point, the liberal students took off in several directions intending to deflect the incoming shame wave: 'Dunn is no longer employed at McKenna, so it's no longer any of our business', 'So she may have committed the false hate crime, but isn't it more important that the fight against hate was brought to the forefront by her in the first place?', and other pathetic and insane defenses and misdirections from the militant liberals.

Now that Dunn has been sentenced, the dozens of militant liberals are nowhere to be found and the few remaining conservatives are dancing on the ruins of their opponents shattered reputations.

I believe that the conservative students even organized a field trip to the sentencing, because they reported that the sentencing judge was not pleased at all that Claremont-McKenna didn't even bother to send a representative to his courtroom.

Professor Dunn accumulated several arrests in Lincoln NE for shoplifting (including a conviction), possessing stolen property, refusing to comply with a police officer's orders, driving on a suspended license, failing to appear in court, and other crimes.

She's got serious mental disorders.

I posted this at http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1302159/posts?page=101#101: The judge who earlier had ordered Dunn to undergo psychological testing said Wednesday she has "severe mental illness," according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. -- From "Former Claremont professor who faked vandalism gets year in jail"

and

Chief among the alleged prior bad acts discussed were allegations from 2000, when Dunn was arrested in Nebraska on suspicion of shoplifting.

According to discussions in open court, the woman claimed an officer roughed her up. However, a witness later reported seeing her inflict bruises upon her own arm and tearing the buttons of her own shirt, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Martin Bean told the judge.

The prosecutor also told the judge that Dunn had a prior petty theft conviction and had once pretended to be a nurse and called a pharmacy seeking prescription medication. -- From "Professor's past in play at fraud trial"

I have always believed that the penalty for false accusation should be at least as severe as the punishment for the crime itself.

This woman should get as many years as would a Ku Klux Klansman who burned a cross on someone's lawn.

Women who falsely cry rape should get ten-to-twenty.

Corrupt cops who frame people for murder should get the needle themselves.

"Claremont McKenna is the most rabid liberal college in the Claremont system"

CMC was the most conservative back in the early '80s. It was a safe visit for President Reagan.

Since President Pamela Gann has been in charge, word is that she hires only liberals. Consequently, I've quit giving money in any sizeable sum to the Alumni Fund. Damned if I'm going to support a bunch of Feminist Studies degrees and leftist pap.

So goes the death of a once fine conservative institution. I blame Gann.

Claremont McKenna is the most rabid liberal college in the Claremont system,

Uh, no.

Unless things have radically changed in the last 10 years, CMC was -- by far -- the most conservative college there. Pitzer was the most liberal, the 'hippie' college, Scripps is all-female, artist-oriented, Harvey-Mudd is basically CalTech, and Pomona was pretty standard.

I've been out of the CMC loop, but I find it hard to believe it's gone from being a decidedly Republican campus to something else.
