As my father says, "One's affinity for large predators varies proportionally with distance..."
He lives out west in mountain lion country in Washington state. Every year the citizens of Seattle pass more rules protecting the mountain lions and making it impossible to control them. He is trying to arrange a "catch and release" program that will let the mountain lions go at the base of the Space Needle in downtown Seattle, which will change the opinions of the city dwellers in a 'right quick.
Manhattan has its own species of large predator.
I'm surprised a big hawk fan doesn't know the answer to this...
Lola is Pale Male's 4th or 5th mate (I forget) to nest with him across from Central Park. Pale Male is famous not only because of his choice of where to build his nest, but also because of his unusual plumage. His mates have just been regular old red-tailed hawks (old figuratively... Lola is quite young.)
Now I want to talk about a little thing called "sarcasm"... Never mind.
I just keep picturing people standing on the road in front of my home, peering with binoculars, and suddenly having to live with that intrusion over a pair of birds.
Right. Who is speaking up for the poor homeless pigeons whose displacement led to Pale Male's opportunity to develop the property. The nest was anchored to anti-pigeon spikes.
And I laughed at the sarcastic part too... Just flubbed the set-up. My bad.
In one scene a man comes with a large sack and throws seeds out for the pigeons......I believe in the park.......hundreds of pigeons converge on the seeds......and then........BBBBBOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM......a hawk swoops down and grabs up one of the pigeons.
I would have to agree there. If the co-op board wants to kick Big Bird out of Seasame Street that's their perogative, but it seems like a paticularly bad PR move to me.
The guy sounds like Russian Mafia. If so, his "associates" would blow the damn buiding down to get him if they wanted. They will kill anyone at any time and like the Islamonazis, don't care at all about bystanders. Those guys make guys like Gotti and the old Italian Mafia look like Camp Fire Girls.
Correction noted :-).
I play golf at a club just north of the city. When I noticed that you never see squirrils early in the morning and late in the afternoon, I asked a woman in the Audubon society about it. She said that squirrils can't look up, because their eyes are on the side of their head. They look side to side. So the way they know the hawk is around is by the shadow. But they can only see his shadow when the sun is realitively high in the sky. As the sun gets lower, the sun moves farther and farther away, and the squirrils know it's time to call it a day.
Clinton works Uptown, after all...
What did they say?
"I've heard stories from two different bartenders on the subject.
What did they say?"
"Mary Tyler Moore always struck me as an angry drunk."
Shes diabetic. I doubt she drinks.
What? Another Russian criminal with bodyguards? Where's the tolerance?
If this nest was on top of a tree in Western Montana, is there any doubt environmentalists would be calling for a 400-acre buffer zone?
Red tails aren't anything near endangered in NM. I've got a couple that routinely keep vermin off my property. When I catch gophers, I just leave the carcass on a fence post for them.
