I would not be suprised to learn that red tails are the most common raptor in North America.

Something tells me none of these nutjobs attended a candle light vigil held for the children of Belsan in Central Park last month.

It is ironic that the same people who want to set aside millions of acres in the West for critters, or stop a dam project for a minnow, would fight amongst themselves over the little postage stamp of turf claimed by the hawks.

That's my take: NIMBY rich liberals. . . who scream the loudest about global warming, etcetera.

red-tailed hawks are far from being endangered. . .

No one, to my knowledge, has claimed that red-tails are endangered. Huh? This is about a specific, unique situation in Manhattan.

You're an Audobon Society member but call the Central Park fans of Pale Male "obsessed wackos". . .? When what they are doing is classic birding.

It appears you have a particular dislike of red-tails.

I live in a large urban area on the Left Coast and I always welcome a sighting of red tails as a messenger of wildness. In the case of Pale Male, he brought a different pace and focus to those who chose to notice him and his 200 lb. nest. There's a touch of romance in the urban legend.

Anyway, his 5th Avenue habitat is being restored.

That is fascinating. I have a squirrel family and I can set my clock by when they are out amazing.

I like the hawk also, but that picture is ridiculous. I am sure that Pale Male will do just fine elsewhere. After all hawks have lived for centuries without a Fifth Avenue Address. As far as animal stories go I am far more concerned with people who are starving, mutilating and beating their dogs and cats to death than this.

Did you see the picture I posted of these nutjobs holding a candlelight vigil? Did you know that one of them was arrested for physically threatening Zahn's 14 year-old son? These are not normal people, and this is not birding. It is artificially controlled. Redtails are not natural clif-dwellers like peregrines. The Audobon society runs birding events in Central Park all the time and north of the city. Hundreds of people see redtails and more exoctic species in their natural enviornment there. What you have in this situation is a bunch of lazy liberals who were taken in by a documentary, but are too lazy to to actually go where they can see the birds in thier natural enviornment. Even though retails are as easy to find as sparrows once you get 45 minutes north of the city. Love nature? Unless you have a gem like Central Park, you need to LEAVE THE CITY to find it. Plus there's a lot of good old fashioned class jealousy thrown in for good measure.

It appears you have a particular dislike of red-tails.

Really? Did you take the time to read my inquiries of their prey and hunting behavior? Didn't think so.

As the sun gets lower, the sun moves farther and farther away, and the squirrils know it's time to call it a day.

should have been: "As the sun gets lower, the shadow moves farther and farther away, and the squirrils know it's time to call it a day."

But I think you both got it.

Nevertheless, red-tailed hawks are far from being endangered.

And I’m sure Central Park has plenty of nesting sites.

I say we should pass a bill in Congress to reintroduce all the species that once populated Manhattan, before the humans arrived and paved it.

Ah Yes!
Mammoths strolling down Central Avenue!

What's the problem?

Those low class hawks building a stick shack on a multi $Million apartment. The residents would rather have good old pigeon droppings – after all, doesn’t the doorman have an umbrella to protect the residents?

Actually I don't understand why they removed the birds since there has been a nest there for 10 years. Why now?

The documentary "Pale Male" was released in 2002, and amateur naturist have been camped out across the street with binoculars ever since.

I read every entry in the thread. I really don't know why you're peeved about the Pale Male situation, or why you're taking the time to write about it. I guess we're on different wavelengths. Maybe we can understand each other on another topic some other time. Have a great day! And, enjoy birding.
