After radio celebrity plugs Chesterfield troop's booth, popcorn orders top $28,000 A friendly jab at the American Civil Liberties Union has turned into a financial bonanza for a tiny nine-member Boy Scout troop from Chesterfield County. Troop 828, with an unexpected boost on Wednesday from nationally syndicated talk show host Glenn Beck, watched its struggling popcorn sales explode. Scouts at a downtown booth had to call for fresh supplies. A Web site was flooded with orders from buyers in 39 states. At last count, sales had topped $28,000. That set a record for the Boy Scouts' Heart of Virginia Council.

And United way is singing the blues, at least here in Alaska.

The did the office donations drive, and everyone in our office asked the poor lady if UW gave to the boy scouts. She said no, and they said no. She said she's getting a lot of that.
(Its not her fault, she has a son who is a Scout, its just a job for her).

United Way should have been singing the blues after 9/11. Those rotten SOBs were taking donations under the guise of helping 9/11 survivors and instead were funnelling the money into their pet projects...one of which being their anti-Second Amendment activities.

Not only in Alaska. The company I work for isn't real hard core about United Way, but we are a big company and United Way was making a hard pitch not to make targeted donations this year (I forget the official term for it). Many people are making donations but forbidding the donation be spent on Planned Parenthood and other non-family friendly causes. It's killing them.

The United way should move its entire operation to France or Sweden. Americans are fed up with their liberal swill.

Give to the Salvation Army instead.

We all need to use our imaginations about defunding the left and their financial supporters. Free Republic is the best forum to keep us all informed on how to best do that..don't watch Network News..cancel subscribtions..boycott companies..and make it visible.
I keep filling out hotel request cards with request for Fox in foreign locations.
Plus we need to support the Scouts and others who have suffered under ACLU etc attacks.

I've been doing just that for years now.

And don't ever buy left wing newspapers like the NY or LA times. And when they call you to get you to subscribe, let them know, in no uncertain terms, why they're not welcome in your home.

"And at one of our Monday night meetings, they decided that it would be real cool to sell popcorn in front of the ACLU...."

A big round of applause for these scouts. (If you are a true scout parent, you will know what action to make.) I am grateful my two boys are Cub Scouts and have their eyes set on Eagle.

Excuse me, but there is no way to make a "targeted" donation. If people in your company are falling for that, lead me to your purchasing agent. I have some great products to sell to your company.

Whatever an organization gets in for other so called targeted donations frees up money from the rest of the budget for the objectionable activities. The only way to hurt a charity you do not agree with is deny it any funds for any purpose until it changes its objectionable ways.

You are, of course, completely wrong. But don't let that stop you from pontificating.

Your post was heartening. It was nice to see people haven't forgotten about what those fudges were pulling with the incredible sums that flew into their coffers.

I can't for the life of me understand how Linda Chao was ever associated with this group of charlatans.

He's absolutely correct. Targeted donations are a scam. All the charity does is shift funds provided by other, non-targeted donations to adjust for those that are targeted, to get donations where the CHARITY wants them to go in the proportion it wants them to go.

Anyone that buys the targeting pap from these charities should understand that it is total BS.

If you are going to target a donation why go through a middleman? Just give directly to the charity of your choice.

Too bad Target has banned Salvation Army bell ringers, because there is no other way to give them money.

And I would go to church, if only they sent a free shuttle to my house to pick me up

He of course was completely right. If you give to United Way , you are giving to EVERYTHING United Way supports. Targeted or not , your money goes to the general fund.

Virginia, under the Democrat Mark Warner, has renamed the United Way "The Commonwealth Campaign" so all stste employees get delivered notices to contribute to "State causes".

Why do Democrats find it so easy to lie, obscure, spin and obfuscate?

Dear Glen,

You obviously have no experience with "Charities". Believe me, from the MS Society to the bogus Red Cross and certainly the PC leftist "United Way" the most highly publicized "charities" are to be kind " ineffective" and to be more truthful, corrupt, self-serving and leftist.

I have served on the boards of several of them.
