The U.N. Why bother? Posted: December 17, 2004

During the aftermath of the worst armed conflict in history, the victors gathered together in their war weariness and asked that timeless question that we've heard after every major conflict: What can we do to make sure this doesn't happen again?

After the previous world war, the purported solution guaranteed to make the "War to end all wars" the war that ended all wars was an organization known as "the League of Nations"(LON). The LON failed because it predicated it's success upon the voluntary surrender of much of what we call national sovereignty to an un-elected, unaccountable organization that had no obligation to respect a country's right to advance it's own interests. US Statesmen had the courage at that time to say "no". Do their modern counterparts have the same courage?

The LON showed it's impotence during the rise of Adolph Hitler when popular opinion, influenced by Nazi propaganda trumped reality, and the world trembled before the hun. Country after country fell to Nazi terror. It wasn't until the Germans invaded Poland in September 1939 that the United Kingdom said "enough is enough", and the real shooting war began. The LON? Impotent, Irrelevant Absent.

And because the LON had provided the illusion of an umbrella of protection for world peace, the danger had been allowed to grow and fester until the bubble burst and millions of good people paid the ultimate price of the LON's shame.

So what did the intellectual elite of the post-war world learn from their mistake? We can see that they met in San Francisco and formed a world organization called the "United Nation"(UN which eventually located itself upon some of the world's most exclusive real estate: Turtle Bay, NYC. They built themselves a huge, towering building, granted themselves diplomatic immunity, and lavish budgets, and proceeded to conduct folly after folly.

Remember Korea? That was a UN operation. American men and women paid the heaviest price, and the worst hardships while the UN dallied, hampered them and eventually dithered away the war. A "truce" ended the actual fighting, but the war remains ongoing. Peace in the Koreas is a tense and nervous peace maintained by thousands of US troops and equipment acting as a buffer between them. The UN got us into this, and has yet to extract us.

Remember Viet Nam? That too was a UN blunder that America paid the price for. Ask any vet what the "Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was and you'll get an earful about how the war was run.

How about Cyprus? Being in Europe's back yard, the UN (who seems to cater to Europe's tastes) sent in other nation's troops to keep the turks and greeks apart. In a strategy I call "Romper Room"(children of the 50's and 60's recognize the kindergarten TV show) , the solution to conflict most embraced by the UN seems to be to put each side in their own corner of the sandbox and keep them apart until they cool off. Unfortunately, a lot of local residents were busy living their day-to-day lives when the UN strung barbed wire and put up guard towers across the island. People who just happened to be away from home that day, on the wrong side of the wire, haven't been able to return home since. Armed guards have turned the island into two armed camps, each staring at each other through the barbed wire. Sure, nobody's shot anybody since, but at what price? They are virtual prisoners of the "UN" troops.

The UN created the country of Israel out of Palestine with little input from the Palestinians, if any. Rather than seek cooperation, and togetherness, the "Romper Roomers" carved a piece of real estate and presented it to the Israeli's and another offered to the Palestinians. The latter declined, and there has been conflict there ever since. Note that there was little conflict prior.

The only time the UN acted with any semblance of responsibility was during the Cuban Missile Crises. And only then they needed to be shown irrefutable proof that Cuba was caught in the act of arming itself with nuclear missiles. Aimed at the US (and subsequently the UN headquarters).

Of course those were the heady days of the UN's brightest promise. Operation Care had largely rebuild Europe from the second world war, Project HOPE provided hospital ships to third world nations to provide health care to the poorest of the poor. UNICEF was saving the lives of countless children.

So what happened? The same thing that happened to Jim Jones's cult in Guyana. They got too big, they had nothing to stop them, they forgot what they are there for. As JFK said: "power corrupte, absolute power corrupts - absolutely". Just like Jim Jones started out on the right path, he fell into the trap of his own success. He grew too big for himself and assumed that with no resistance, that he had absolute control. "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts - absolutely". So it was with Jim Jones, so it is with the UN.

What is the UN's newest achievements? Well, they got mad at the US when we tried to eliminate the scourge of communist influence in central and south America. They hired one of the "Spice Girls" as a special ambassador for reproductive rights. They have the Abortion Ship, supposedly going to travel to Ireland, Poland and other countries to provide abortions to women of countries that ban the practice. They gave us Bosnia, Kosovo and the "Romper Room" solution to the Balkans - which was to balkanize them even more that the combatants wanted to. And yes, US soldiers are keeping what passes for peace there.

So... what problems did the UN resolve? Did they resolve the slave issue in Sudan? Did they stop genocide in Cambodia? Rwanda? Anywhere? Did they resolve the conflicts in the middle east? Ireland? Anywhere? Are they trying to stop terrorism? Are they doing anything about Zimbabwe? Oh! They DID urge us to go into Somalia - for all the good that did. And they managed to declare Antarctica an international resource, partitioning the continent so that everybody had an area of responsibility (can you say it? "Romper Room")

But they do manage to cost us money. Tons of it. A lot more than many people figure. First of all, what about that hyper-prime real estate they occupy in New York City? I bet there are a lot of people who would drool at the prospect of developing that into something more beneficial to the city, perhaps a hotel, convention center, etc.. And what about all the fines and tickets these so-called diplomats don't have to pay?

And they do manage to actively thwart the spread of democracy whilst keeping mum about the spread of socialism and tyranny. Oh! I forgot, since each country has a vote, and since most of the countries in the world are either tyrannies or dictatorships of some sort, we're outvoted - in our own front yard! When faced with naked aggression, the UN whines and passes worthless resolution after worthless resolution - if that, but the US is constantly condemned for not spending all of it's resources propping up the right dictatorships. In other words we're to blame for not subsidizing our own opposition.

Insanity. The whole thing is insanity (note that I haven't even touched "oil-for-food"). But relax folks, I have considered this and have a solution: Let the UN fix itself!

Now wait just a dern minute! I know that Kofi Anan and his ilk are crafting a SYA restructuring of the UN as I type this, but that isn't what I had in mind. First of all, look for "his oiliness" to demand a world tax, a world police force and a world army - strengthening his own hand at our expense (and that of every other free nation). But that is not really the solution. Why should we continue to subsidize Mr. Anan and his band of international leeches whilst they continue to bask in the greatness of our greatest city, enjoying our freedoms whilst undermining them? Why should he be able to dine at the finest restaurants and partake of the best in world culture when much of the world is low and going down? Do we really want to create an international Nero out of him?

Nope. Not if I have my say. I would immediately propose moving the UN. Move the UN to the worst trouble spot in the world. Either the middle east, or Africa (preferably Zimbabwe) where they can't hide in their ivory towers, but must live with the day-to-day consequences of their policies. Maybe if they had to eat like the poor people, or had to dodge bullets, they would think wiser thoughts than who has the best prime rib? I wonder just how brave Mr. Anan would be without the ability to come to America and hide behind the protection offered by the US military.

It would be cheaper too. They wouldn't have to be paid as much to enjoy the same standard of living because wherever they go, living would cost less than NYC. Their real estate would be cheaper too, not to mention construction costs, maintenance, local staffing, etc. Without cold winters they'd not have to pay much heating costs either.

Think about it. Had the UN been closer to Rwanda would they have dallied so long? Maybe they would deal with a tyrant for once if said tyrant had the ability to surround the UN complex with hostile, barely trained soldiers wielding machetes. Maybe they'd stand up to aggression for once when it lobs a cannon shot through Mr. Anan's picture window. Maybe they'd get an appreciation for democracy when living next door to the grinding poverty inherent in a socialist society.

Maybe they wouldn't allow the likes of Fidel Castro to bang his shoes on their counters like a petulant brat demanding attention. Maybe they wouldn't grant a world stage to petty thugs like Yassir Arafat who insisted upon carrying a gun into the security council chambers. Maybe they would appreciate the millions of dollars the US sends overseas when they have to eat with locals whose only food comes from US (not UN) charities. Maybe they'd appreciate pay-as-you-go healthcare when they have to live in a place where care is free, but non-existent. Maybe they'll appreciate the automobile when they have to walk because there isn't any gas.

I'm getting annoyed at these parasites who come to our country in the guise of world fellowship, belly up to the bar of US freedoms, demand our money, and spend their time dissing us while the world burns. The prospect of Kofi Anan in his vast greatcoat wandering around NYC while many people in the world don't have any coats or even shoes disgusts me. Him in his private jet trotting around the globe while many cannot even find a hospital offends me. But his spending world resources on himself, and corrupting the mission of the UN to feather his own bed - right under my nose makes me sick. It is high time to tar-feather and run these slugs out of the country - and their liberal lapdogs too.

Have there been any opinion polls of late asking whether we should stay in or get out of the UN?

You've got to be kidding. Arabs were killing Jews there since 1929. Remember Husseini? The Mufti of Jerusalem? There were no such people called "Palestinians" either. Except for Jews of course. The area known Palestine was under British control after the fall of the Ottoman empire. The entire mid-east was divided up, with Arabs getting most of the land. Jews were supposed to get much more than they have now. Regardless, Jews began rebuilding Israel, which was nothing but a malaria infested pile of rubble at the turn of the century. Nobody lived there, except the odd Jew, Some Christians. See Mark Twain's description. Palestine was a region, never a state, a town, a city. Never was there a currency, a government, leader, king or otherwize.
